I enjoyed it, too. I thought it started out a little slow but I wound up enjoying it.

Judy my favourite Michael Gilbert is Mr. Calder & Mr. Behrens Stories by Michael Gilbert by Michael Gilbert about two aged spies who deal with British traitors or foreign agents. The writing is witty though. You my enjoy those stories. And I am enjoying Sweet Danger. Of course any Campion story is a great read.

Yes, I enjoyed it very much! My best friend sent me a copy of Twenty-One Days (Daniel Pitt, #1) by Anne Perry , autographed by Anne Perry herself, and I liked it very much. I was looking forward to this second in the series, and although it’s rather slow in the beginning, it really picks up and delivers a satisfying finish! I think you’ll enjoy both books, especially if you’re comfortable with Perry’s sometimes dense style (secrets, misdirection, wheels within wheels!)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I have a problem when people post only the cover and not the title. Since you have to go an extra step to post the cover, would it be too much to ask for you to also post the title?

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 5049 comments Just started A Rising Man, first in a new-to-me series recommended by a few other Good Readers. Enjoying it very much so far, Sam Wyndham is a great character, and Calcutta in 1919 is a fascinating place.

Sure, Elizabeth - if you’re talking to me, I posted the first in the new Anne Perry series, Twenty-One Days Twenty-One Days (Daniel Pitt, #1) by Anne Perry . The book I just started is A Rising Man, A Rising Man (Sam Wyndham, #1) by Abir Mukherjee .

Thanks for this, Susan. I've marked as wishlist for myself and a member of my real life book club likes everything India, so I will pass it on to her, too.

Thanks, Susan. It was more a general comment. The covers are small and old eyes don't really pick up enough with covers without the title.

You bet! It’s very interesting, I’m actually switching between the audiobook and the library book - some previous patron clearly enjoyed eating Cheetos or bbq chips (something orange!) while reading this book - yuck! So I’m glad I have the audiobook, the narrator is very good, I can recommend both.

I hate that! My library has an Overdrive edition. At least they do now, and I hope will still by the time I get to it. I think my reading eyes are bigger than my reading stomach. ;-)

Ewww! Susan sorry the previous reader was selfish. Like Elizabeth (Alaska) I am happy that my library uses the Libby app, however I still get in my Luddite mode & want the printed page. If the printed book looks too egregious though I don't check it out. Hahaha

We have Libby too, but they only had the physical book, so I requested it, picked it up, and didn’t notice all the stains until I opened it to read! But the library has date-stamped the stains and written “noted”, so at least they are aware (I feel bad for the librarian having to do that job, you know they’re book lovers). I’m with you, if I had noticed it was so icky, I would’ve passed on it - it’s very unusual, in my experience using the library here over the last 20+ years - people are usually pretty careful!

Elizabeth (Alaska) What is Libby?

It is an app by Overdrive, used for library ebooks & audiobooks, Elizabeth.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Thanks, ShanDizzy. I have an extension on Chrome that tells me here at GR whether my library has either an ebook or audiobook, how many copies, and whether or not there are holds and how many. But no app. I just send the book to my Kindle.

Yes I put the Owen series ahead of Dorothy Simpson's Inspector Thanet. I can't quite put my finger on why I stopped reading it for a time. Maybe because the last story was unbearably sad. Have any of you read any of the Thanet stories?

Just to add, although the mods have no plans to run more Bobby Owen buddy reads, if any member wants to set one up and run it, that would be fine. (We can also set up the threads for you.) We do also have a favourite author thread for the author, E.R. Punshon.

The Lockridges have two other series as well. One features Captain Heimrich, he first appears in the second North novel. The other series features Detective Nathan Shapiro. Happy reading.

I've started a British Library Crime Classics book, The Belting Inheritance by Julian Symons - not very far in yet, but I have been really looking forward to trying Symons.

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 5049 comments Almost finished with our current Poirot reread, Appointment with Death Appointment with Death (Hercule Poirot, #19) by Agatha Christie . Alternating with my own used hard copy, and Hugh Fraser’s wonderful narration on Scribd - I love to listen while knitting! No, I’m not pretending to be Miss Marple...

He is my favorite Christie narrator - well, I did listen to part of a Marple last year while in hospital, narrated by Joan Hickson herself, that was pretty awesome as well!

message 390: by Tania (new)

Tania | 462 comments I've started Death Has Deep Roots Death Has Deep Roots by Michael Gilbert . It mostly seems to take place after WW2 and is a bit of a courtroom drama.

message 391: by Bruce (new)

Bruce Susan, ironically, one of Joan Hickson’s first appearances in a Christie adaptation was in the 40’s stage play of Appointment with Death. Her first appearance was in the movie Love From a Stranger.

The stage play was similar to the play in some regards, but the solution was different, and Poirot was omitted. The female doctor solves the case in the play.

I've started Speedy Death, the first Mrs Bradley mystery by Gladys Mitchell - a great start which has immediately got me hooked.

I'm also currently reading The Return of Mr Campion: 13 Collected Stories by Margery Allingham. I tend to find her collections of short stories quite uneven, but I am a fan and this one was available on Kindle Unlimited.

message 396: by Jan C (new)

Jan C (woeisme) | 1820 comments I've started Rounding the Mark by Andrea Camilleri. The beginning sounds like he is still in a mid-life crisis which started in the last book. He is theeatening to retire but as there are 15-20 more books that may not be happening.

Elizabeth (Alaska) The plan for today is to start Death In Disguise, our September buddy read.

I am enjoying Death in Disguise, Elizabeth. I really love this series.

I finished Speedy Death and was disappointed with it after a great start - I have some major problems with the plot. I did like the writing style, though, so may try another one by Gladys Mitchell.
