Cheryl | 16 comments The Luminous Dead was fantastic!

I just finished The Last by Hanna Jameson. I couldn't put it down. I really enjoyed it.

Franklinbadger | 79 comments I recently read Wakenhyrst and found it genuinely disturbing.

I'm very tempted by The Luminous Dead - is it scary?

The Luminous Dead is claustrophobic and psychologically suspenseful. I loved it.

Hadn't heard of this one. Picked it up because I saw it here. Really interesting storytelling and a quick read. Thanks for the tip!

Sonora Taylor (sonorawrites) | 54 comments I’m reading Everyone’s a Moon: Strange Stories by Sawney Hatton; and I’m really enjoying it so far. Well-written, weird tales that favor the supernatural.

Parts of TLD I absolutely LOVED. My biggest issue was the dialogue got super repetitive.

Amanda McHugh (mandymchugh) | 6 comments I'm reading The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison now. About 60 pages in and it's stellar.

Laurie (barksbooks) (barklesswagmore) | 505 comments Teeth by Kelli Owen

I'm done and it's getting four stars. It was an interesting take on the vampire condition and there's a killer who is disgusting and I loved it, haha. I recommend.

I loved TBG! I've enjoyed the rest of the series too (reading book 4 right now), but the first book is really one of my favorite thrillers of all time.

message 62: by destiny ♡ (new)

destiny ♡ howling libraries (howlinglibraries) Yaaaay! I love Darcy. I think she was my first ever indie author love. I don't think I've read that one yet, though - I need to catch up on her releases.

Laurie (barksbooks) (barklesswagmore) | 505 comments I keep meaning to read TBG. It's one of those books that is stuck in tbr limbo :(

I think that's the only complaint I would have. There were a few things (not just the dialogue) that were repetitive. But yeah, I loved it. :)

I'm really enjoying it so far. The writing is great and they're a lot like episodes of The Twilight Zone. I'm iffy on science fiction but these tales are striking a chord with me.

message 67: by Marie (new)

Marie Okay everyone I am going to put up some books with authors and my reviews of the books. Just bear with me a little bit. lol :)

I love the writing style of Darcy Coates and the way she can weave those ghostly tendrils around you while you are sitting in a quiet house. I usually read on my kindle, so I am normally sitting in the dark with just the back light of my kindle. Spooky!
The first book I just read over a year ago and I loved Craven Manor! The second book was my first introduction to Darcy back in 2016. I have read more books by her which I will post later as I want to share some other women authors on this post. :)

Darcy Coates:

I love Amy Cross as she will grab you from the first chapter and then slam dunk you into the story. Then you are trapped forever in the pages of the book!

The Ghost of Molly Holt was a creepy and haunting ride and the first part of the book has some disturbing things within so if your sensitive to that kind of thing then tread carefully, but most of it was about the haunting of Molly Holt.

The Bride of Ashbyrn House is a spooky thrill ride which I read in the quiet of the night on my kindle. Also I read it before bed which probably wasn't a good thing! lol

That is all for now, but I have some more that I will post later. I read mostly horror, so that is probably what you will be getting from me. lol Remember, variety is the spice of life! lol :)

message 68: by Marie (new)

Marie Okay here is an indie author that I really love! Her writing style just flows along and though she is not well known, she has some gripping stories that will have you biting your nails with suspense! I haven't read all of what she has out there though I own most of her books, but they are buried in my overflowing tbr pile. With that being said here are the two books I have read by her.

Anna Willett:

Backwoods Ripper by Anna Willett

Sonora Taylor (sonorawrites) | 54 comments The Lady from the Black Lagoon: Hollywood Monsters and the Lost Legacy of Milicent Patrick

Just started this one and love it so far. I minored in film studies and love reading nonfiction books about cinema. I've also already had rage feels over everyday sexism in the workplace.

I think you're going to love it. I read it and enjoyed it. It was both infuriating and fascinating. I know Toni of LOHF loved it.

message 71: by Jenn (new)

Jenn Schweder | 2 comments I’ve just started reading Brother by Ania Ahlborn, and this is one LOHF that does not mess around. Blood is spilling on the first page!! Ahlborn is quickly becoming one of my favourite writers, I think this is the third or fourth book of hers that I’ve picked up.

message 72: by Christa (new)

Christa I just started In Our Own Worlds: Four LGBTQ+ Tor.com Novellas -- it was a freebie download from Tor. I only just got into the first novella, Margaret Killjoy's "The Lamb Will Slaughter the Lion," but so far it's got some great folk horror!

message 73: by destiny ♡ (new)

destiny ♡ howling libraries (howlinglibraries) I love Margaret Killjoy! Both novellas in that series are great, but the first was my favorite. It's got such a fun atmosphere. I really hope she writes more in the series!

Oh it's a series! Thanks for the heads-up! She's new to me but I'm already intrigued enough to look for more. :)

message 75: by Katey (new)

Katey Currently reading And Her Smile Will Untether the Universe, based on a recommendation from this group. It's like a delicious chocolate box of creepiness!

I grabbed that one too. I'm happy to hear you're enjoying it.

Cécile | 56 comments I just finished When darkness loves us by Elizabeth Engstrom.

message 78: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 16 comments Recently read I Call Upon Thee, my first Ania Ahlborn story after seeing her recommended here so much. Can't wait to read more of her work!

Laurie (barksbooks) (barklesswagmore) | 505 comments I'm almost finished Little Darlings by Melanie Golding and it's SO creepy!

message 80: by Tracy (new)

Ooh--a "new-to-me" author!

message 82: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracy_reads79) | 77 comments It’s probably more dark thriller/suspense than horror but definite horror element and it’s been shelved that was a few times already.

Christa Christa wrote: "I just started In Our Own Worlds: Four LGBTQ+ Tor.com Novellas -- it was a freebie download from Tor. I only just got into the first novella, Margaret Killjoy's "The Lamb Will Slaug..."

Update: LOVED all 4 of these stories! Margaret Killjoy's was the only one that could properly be classed as horror, but I am trying to diversify my genres and so the SFF in the other three wasn't unwelcome. (I still don't gravitate to fantasy, which is where the final two stories landed, but these pieces being all ownvoices & character driven stories helped.)

message 84: by Sonora (new)

Sonora Taylor (sonorawrites) | 54 comments I’m reading The Fifth Season by NK Jemison for our office book club. I’m normally not into sci-fi but this one’s interesting and compulsively readable, even though it has whole chapters in 2nd person narration, which drives me nuts — makes me feel like I’m playing D&D.

message 85: by Amanda (new)

Amanda McHugh (mandymchugh) | 6 comments Anybody read Vox when it came out? I'm halfway through and think it's pretty good.

message 86: by Latasha (new)

Latasha (latasha513) i'm listening to Wylding Hall i'm on chapter 4 so no spooky stuff yet.

message 87: by Christa (new)

Christa I just started on Justine Musk's BloodAngel, which would be one of 3 reasons why I should not be allowed near Mr. K's on any sort of regular basis! I find vampire novels to be somewhat hit or miss, but so far the writing is very compelling.

message 88: by Tborder (new)

Tborder | 79 comments I am reading New Music for Old Rituals by Tracy Fahey.....if you like folk horror this is one for you.

message 92: by Marie (new)

I loved this one!!

message 94: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 16 comments I tried to read Blackwoods Ripper and then bailed on it. Not because it wasn't good, but because it's a style of horror that just stresses me out. I can't be the only one that has something like that right?

I ended up reading The Memory Trees by Kali Wallace. (I think I heard about it on this forum somewhere.) I'm not sure it's really horror BUT I LOVED IT!

message 95: by Sonora (new)

Sonora Taylor (sonorawrites) | 54 comments I'm reading "White is for Witching" by Helen Oyeyemi and love it so far. My style of book for sure.

Kimberly, I do believe that this was one of her scariest books that she has written so far! I could literally feel the haunting atmosphere of the book radiating off the pages! :)

message 98: by Marie (new)

message 99: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 16 comments I read Rolling in the Deep and Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant and am head over heels in love with these books! It was like scifi horror but instead of space, they're out at sea, and instead of aliens it's mermaids! I don't think I'll ever get over this and I've been struggling to get into my next read because of it.
