Hi Jen
I asked Ezi about this (someone else had a somewhat similar question.) Her daughter has to go to the dentist, she she'll be answering questions when she gets home.

SandyL | 474 comments Mary, Mary, Just a bit contrary wrote: "That was early."

Ezi's daughter broke her tooth and she isn't sure how long she'll be gone today, so she posted it early. Yay! - (on the posting, not her daughter's tooth!)

message 159: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 783 comments Thanks Sandy!! I kept looking in the tags and did eventually find "disabilities" by 6 people so I will go ahead and get started tonight. I found this book in my laundry room a few weeks ago and always meant to continue the series.

Qualifying for the shelf is a bit confusing so I will be interested in the answer in general.

Wonder and Handle With Care definitely will. I'm not sure about House Rules - waiting for Ezi to respond later today.

Murder with Fried Chicken and Waffles (Mahalia Watkins Soul Food Mystery #1) by A.L. Herbert

Pages: 327
Fits: library book
Finished: 6/9/19
3.5 stars

This was good but fairly predictable. Standard cozy where the amateur sleuth does some pretty stupid stuff to solve a murder instead of letting the cops do their job. But then, that's why you read a cozy. I'll definitely continue on with the series. I liked that the main character wasn't the normal cozy cliche of thirty something or senior citizen white woman. I did think it got a little too wordy sometimes about the food prep especially since it had recipes in it already.

Review: I had high hopes for this book after so many good reviews, but it just didn't do anything for me. The story had promise. Rebecca Hart is a young woman whose life is upended after losing a leg at the Boston Marathon. She moves to Pilgrim Cove for the summer, into a special house called Sea View House. There is some sort of magic that happens to those who stay at this house, helped by a band of retired guys called the ROMEOs. Rebecca meets veterarian Adam Fielding and his young daughter Sara. Adam lost his wife to cancer five years ago, and his last girlfriend left him to marry a long-lost love come back to Pilgrim's cove, so he's done with romance. This book also contained lots of pets (Adam does Greyhound rescue and is a veterinarian) which is something else I love in books. But the writing style was strange and I just couldn't get into this book. I also didn't care for Rebecca's mother. Although there was a lot of promise in the premise, this book didn't deliver for me.

Book: Brain On Fire: My Month of Madness by Sussanah Cahalan
Pages: 250
Qualification: Goodreads stories about individuals with disabilities shelf
Completed : 6/14
Rating: 4 ☆☆☆☆
Review: Story about the authors battle against an immune disease attacking her brain. Her struggles , along with family and friends to identify what is the cause of what has been happening to her are eye opening. Interesting view into how the medical community functions in relation to rare diseases or syndromes. Hepled me learn to empathize a bit better towards people struck by a sudden disability and their healing and recovery process.

A very entertaining read. Loved Ash. He's trying so hard to be the scary, uber-grumpy, scarred recluse and he's just so bad at it. I mean that in a good way. He wants to be that guy but he can't help being the witty, charming man he was before the accident. So instead of repulsing his bride of convenience and servants, like he wants to do, he just endears himself to them. Highly recommend if you like historical romances that have an unusual female lead. The scarred hero has been done to death but Emma is a bit unique. She's not the typically bluestocking or ingenue or the common "save me from being ruined" heroine.

House Rules by Jodi Picoult

Qualification: 8 on list for stories about individuals with disabilities

5 stars
Review: Once again Jodi Picoult has taken a difficult, somewhat controversial topic and made it personable, made it to where you can really empathize with the major characters. Jacob is an eighteen year old with Aspergers Syndrome. It’s told from the alternating perspectives of Jacob, his brother, Theo, his mother, his lawyer, and the lead detective when Jacob is arrested for the murder of his life skills tutor. You really get to see how Jacob thinks and how his condition affects those around him. It was a truly insightful and interesting read.

Review: Protagonist moves away from a bad experience in Manhattan to the Hamptons, and sets up an interior design business. She unwittingly gets into the midst of a murder investigation while conducting said business at a great mansion on the island. I found this to be an easy read, with likeable main characters and a great setting. I appreciated how the mc doesn't stress over her hearing impairment, but rather deals with it and gets on with living.

Review: It's been a while since I had read the previous book but I quickly remembered the same characters I enjoyed before. Don and Rosie are now married and living in NYC when Rosie becomes pregnant (unplanned). The story is how they react to the pregnancy and cope in their own ways. Rosie seemed a bit cold this time. She could have been fleshed out a bit more but still an enjoyable read that I would recommend.
