Book: My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite
Pages: 228 pages (kindle version)
Completed: 6/6/19
Rating: 4 stars
Review: Korede's sister has killed her 3rd boyfriend, officially qualifying herself to be considered a serial killer. This is a story about the power between men and women and the power of family set in modern day Lagos, Nigeria. It is a quick read and I enjoyed the story of sisters and the backdrop of Lagos which is a whole different world from northern Nigeria where I have spent a few months. I would recommend this to my friends.

Review: This classic and beloved tale about Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy is a true delight. When they first see each other Mr. Darcy is obnoxious, arrogant and insulting. Lizzy is a self-assured second daughter who, while insulted, took him with a grain of salt. The evolution of their relationship, as well as the drama surrounding Lizzy's family, is wonderfully and fully fleshed out. The writing style is a little "heavy" but worth the effort. I would definitely recommend.

This was just meh for me. It wasn't bad but I don't get why everyone is so in love with this book. I found parts of it quite boring and didn't find the writing all that exceptional. I didn't even really like Patroclus or Achilles all that much in the book. I do plan to give the author another try as I already have the audio book on my IPOD.

Review: Interesting story and well written. Not very familiar with Historical fiction genre, but would recommend to a friend. Surprised to view the story line partially through the persepective of a nursing home resident. Some passages were very graphic and explicit. Might not be everyone's cup of tea for those that dislike sexually graphic content in their novels. Just a heads up. It was a page turner for me, so it felt like a quick read. This book was made into a movie and I hope to see it soon.

Review: This was a fun book! Daphne Bridgerton's mother is determined to get her married, but Daphne doesn't like any of the men she's met so far - thank goodness her brothers agree! Simon Bassett has been out of the country for years, avoiding his father. Now that his father has passed, Simon is back in England and, although he has no intention of socializing or attracting a wife, he attends a party to pay his respects to an old friend. I loved the way Simon and Daphne met - it was hilarious! The two come up with a plan for a fake courting to keep the aggressive mothers away from both of them, but it ends up backfiring when they are forced to get married. I really loved how there was such fun and humor in the book, but also sadness and heartache. And although I knew there would ultimately be a HEA, I was kept on my toes by the journey to get there. I don't know how I missed reading this series before, but I'm exciting to read the next book!

Review: I really enjoyed this book as well. It captivated my attention from the very first page. It’s the story of a college town in California that’s suddenly the center of an epidemic of a sleeping illness. The victims are locked in perpetual sleep that they can’t be woken from, a sleep filled with extraordinary, vivid dreams. It starts among the students at the college and quickly spreads throughout the town. It was such a unique idea and executed so well. It’s the first book I’ve read by this author but I’m definitely looking forward to reading more of her work.

Jen K | 783 comments Congrats everyone on so many completed reads!!

@Tiffany, the opossums sound adorable! I used to foster cats and many kittens for the ASPCA in NYC but my building now doesn't allow animals. I really miss fostering.

Supported friends by participating in DC's Pride 5K last night. I've been invited for the subsequent parade and festival this weekend but may just catch up on errands, cleaning and reading. We will see.

I really want to finish my Historical book this weekend. I used to think I was a fast reader until I joined these GR groups and challenges!

No rush Jen - it's early days. Enjoy your weekend! I'm not too far from West Hollywood where they have a huge Pride festival all weekend and a big parade tomorrow - I love seeing all the festivities on the news, but it's too many people for me to want to venture into the madness!

Actually, possums can’t get rabies. Their body temperature is too low. They’re also immune to some venoms and eat ticks. They’re great to have in your yard. And the babies are adorable! 😁

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 948 comments Mostly a quiet weekend at home.

Spent last evening kayaking with my friend.

Went out for lunch and ice cream with my bestie today. My daughter is at a wedding and my guy is working. Making Phad Thai for dinner. Then we'll probably binge watch some form of British detective show.

House and yard work tomorrow. Maybe go for a swim at the gym.

Always reading and audio book.

Review: I usually read cozy mysteries, but because of the popsugar reading challenge I find myself reading, or listening to, all sorts of other good stuff. I thought this book was well done, with both lighthearted and very sad moments. A romance that played out over ten years. I would recommend it.

Book: Emily of New Moon by L.M. Montgomery
Pages: 368
Qualification: Tagged as Historical
Completed: 6/8/19
Rating: 5 stars
Review: Growing up, I loved all the works of LM Montgomery and would read them over and over. While fiery Anne gets most of the attention, Emily was dearest to me. The book is about a little girl who loves words and nature who is orphaned and sent to live with her estranged great-aunts and cousin and how she adjusts to the new life. Some story lines or phrases are a bit more worrisome from the perspective of an adult but I still love it and would recommend to any child.
