John | 44 comments Just got done scanning physical books and cataloging them and all the digital I own. Wicked Amazon with Kindle freebies, box sets, sales. Audible credits and sales, used book stores. Stuff has added up; Calibre shows over 2500 books.

Time to read and click the read count up! Oh yeah, and enjoy fantasy.

Get serious about series in 2019:

Demon Cycle - Peter V. Brett Completed.

Kingkiller Chronicle - Patrick Rothfuss reading soon as given up waiting for 3rd book.
started June 1 2019 Completed The Name of Wind
June 29 2019 Completed Wise Man's Fear

Monster Hunter - Larry Corriea Finish International and start/finish Memoirs.
2019-07-20 Finished Sinners

Magicians - Lev Grossman 2019-08-06 3 of 3; completed series.
Earthseed: The Complete Series TBR
Wild Seed SFFBC reeled me in 2019-06-22 completed. Completed Kindred and on a Octavia E. Butler reading binge.

Others to be added as discovered thru this group and more sales. Sprinkling in some Sci Fi, Mystery, and Thrillers.
Still counts for me but not for group:
Hell Divers series May 2019 5 of 5 (new one coming Fall 2019; argh! and yippee)
2019-07-10 Philip K Dick read some novels and short stories I missed, re-read others. Just finished several short stories available from Project Gutenberg and starting on Ubik.

Info on free book manager I mentioned and highly recommend:

Good luck with your challenge!

I'm exactly the same as you concerning the Kingkillers Chronicles. I was waiting for the series to be finished but... Well, my curiosity is stronger.

Oh, and there's going to be a second trilogy in the First Law World soon :D

message 4: by John (new)

John | 44 comments yeah, Kingkillers priority moved up as family also recommended it and I have 3.

good news about the First Law series as really like Abercrombie's writing but will wait until all 3 are out :) Have Sharp Ends (short stories) and the two others to work thru to keep me company.

one of things this group has done for me is queue up multiple trilogies (or more) that have already been written. Robert Jordan, then George RR broke me on waiting. the next book will be ready " real soon now". right.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Cataloging all those books is a major accomplishment. My hat is off to you. I've tried several times through the years & never managed it. I might have managed if today's tech was available 30 or 40 years ago, but I've got too many other things on the plate today.

Calibre is a fantastic program. I've donated a couple of times over the years, but not as much as he deserves.

yeah, this was my 3rd or 4th attempt and would not have done it without being able to scan book covers and ISBNs. Both Calibre and GoodReads have also improved over the years so now think I have a handle on all the mediums. Now I just have to keep up when the sales hit ;)

John | 44 comments Helen wrote: "I’m thinking of reading the Weeks books too."

Started the Weeks series early May, really liked the start, and then saw a new book was coming out later this year. I have a "thing" (I call it an idiosyncrasy but friends and family use other less nice words) about not starting a new series when I know that there are more books coming. enuff series out there completed that I can read.

Definitely will come back to it early fall.

I know what you mean about uncompleted series. I try to stay away from them but it's hard because some are really good. If you know they come out pretty quick it's not so bad.

Oh, such a great book and series. I wish another would come out.

Yeah I'm cutting back on starting series' unless complete.

Um.....you know name of the wind isn't complete?

message 14: by John (new)

John | 44 comments I do. A daughter-in-law told me to forget about 3 ever coming out and just read the ones I have as I would really like them.

Have 1, 2, 2.5 which is over 50 hours of listening. Even at 1.5 speed, gonna take a while.

And then this series can join several others that I stalled on; Robert Jordan, George RR, Terry Goodkind leap to mind. At least I can finish Wheel of Time. Broke down and bought new paperbacks of the last 2 in the series by Brandon Sanderson. Was not able to get them at the used bookstores I frequent. never went back to Sword of Truth and suspect will do the same for Song of Ice and Fire .

message 15: by John (new)

John | 44 comments Other Fantasy group, Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Club led me to new authors. Updated my challenge to include a new rabbit hole of Octavia E. Butler books.

Helen: Um.....you know name of the wind isn't complete?

Just finished The Name of the Wind and yes it was a great book. I think it matched the hype and is up there Jordan's Eye of the World for epic fantasy start. On to Wise Man's Fear and REALLY hoping that I do not regret the not waiting for the 3rd book.

They are both great. I read the first as someone said it was standalone.

At one point, he’d finished and was editing the third- this could be massively inaccurate mind. Then he started a rewrite on part of it and was never happy again.

I get frustrated over not getting an ending. I get that they don’t ‘owe’ it etc that people argue but I want an end!

Mark Lawrence has become an author, written four trilogies, a collection of shorts, lives on social media and has completed another series yet to be published since George’s last book.

Not that I’m bitter......,,

Tnkw01 | 2293 comments Mod
Like Mark, Brandon Sanderson is another prolific writer. He seems to crank them out all the time.

message 19: by Janette (new)

Janette | 211 comments That’s true but we’re going to have to wait a long while for the Radience series to be completed.
And I’m not sure about the ‘They don’t owe us’ argument. It’s the book buying public who support authors and fans who buy into characters and follow their stories. I actually feel that authors do have some responsibility to finish their series. Otherwise it’s a bit like leading people up the garden path, a nice journey but then you get stranded.

message 20: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I agree about the authors, Janette. Life comes up, but they should try. At least they shouldn't flip us off & leave us hanging the way Martin did.

When a reporter recently tried to ask about the possibility of him not finishing the series, he basically said "f**k you". It was a legitimate question because Martin is very up in age and we saw what happened with Jordan and his series.

message 22: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) There's actually a legitimate picture of him flipping us the middle finger when asked in 2014.
https://www.theguardian.com/books/201...

I don't see the question as all that rude. Jordan had passed the baton to Sanderson fairly recently & Martin was way behind even then. A lot of us have read his work his entire career & really happy to see his books finally get popular. Now I'm not. IF he ever finishes the series, I'll wait & buy the book(s) used, if at all. Not that it will hurt him any, but I'll feel better about it. I don't want to support a jerk.

Times have changed. Authors are often selling their books based on their personality & social media. It's not always fair or good to put them under a spot light, but that's the current trend. They need to understand that & respond accordingly. It also means they do owe their readers a bit more, too.

John | 44 comments Tnkw01 wrote: "Like Mark, Brandon Sanderson is another prolific writer. He seems to crank them out all the time."

Saw Mark from this group/Goodreads so will be a new pickup for me. Just finished The Wise Man's Fear and really like it, want to move on to number and know that I can't.

Bitter works.

But I am also not learning. Going to start Sanderson's Radiance knowing I will have to wait on yet another series with possible not able to finish. Can only wait so long and have been working on my accepting things I cannot OCD about.

John | 44 comments Completed Kingkiller Chronicles and argh! Enjoyed the 2nd book more than the 1st, liked The Slow Regard of Silent Things and want to complete the series. To quote Inigo from Princess Bride: "I hate waiting".

Oh, John. I finished the second book like eight years ago. I'm still waiting for the next one. I really hope we don't have to wait eight more years.

Yeah, my daughter-in-law told me that I would really like the series and did not expect the 3rd one any time soon, if ever. She was right. On to Sanderson's Stormlight series and what is currently available and probably another rant.

message 27: by John (new)

John | 44 comments Completed the The Magician's Land to finish the series. Finished Monster Hunter Siege, started The Monster Hunter Files and just acquiredMonster Hunter Guardian which for me will complete MHI series. Enjoyed the series but starting to be a bit repetitive so time for a new saga. Sister Fantasy/SciFi group is reading The Way of Kings which is also in my serious about series list so will be starting down the Stormlight Archive rabbit hole.

John | 44 comments was traveling for 3 weeks with limited online connection and time to focus. Changed reading pattern to short stories/novels and genre to Mystery/Crime. Working on the Sherlock Holmes canon so meets my goal of finishing series but only a few stories have a fantasy classification. Adding this to my sprinkling in section.

Halfway thru 4 novels and 56 short stories. Kindle and Audible: Sherlock Holmes: The Definitive Audio Collection and Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories, Volume I Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories, Volume II

I've only read a couple of the MHI series but I love them. Really need to get back into them.

I read a bunch of Sherlock in collections a few years ago. I stalled after reading a really boring one - I don’t remember which.

message 31: by John (new)

John | 44 comments I'm still working my way thru the collections but they are starting to get repetitive so will see what I finish. Would recommend everything I have read so far. Was traveling so needed something other than 800 page dark complex material that required absorption and retention. Will get back to The Priory of the Orange Tree in a bit.

Helps that I am going between listening and reading. Stephen Fry was an inspired choice for Holmes and provides background and personal anecdotes.

The Burning White is out tomorrow on Audible. Will start the series this week and with 5 to get thru, will be listening for a few weeks. Will update the main topic when done. Between this challenge and one from SFFBC, have read a bunch more books this year.

3 down and 2 to go. This is a phenomenal series! Up there with Wheel of Time and A Song of Ice and Fire series. Bonus for me, discovering series late in the writing with a known concluding novel.

Your right, it is phenomenal.

John | 44 comments Completed The Burning White which completes the series and it is my new favorite series. Going to be a tough act to follow. Read a lot of series this year and thinking about just standalones for the rest of the year. But also picked up The Inheritance Trilogy so not sure.

Good to have choices :)

I'm going to work on my challenge and do the BOM for December. I over extended my challenges this year, so l believe I'll need to scale it back a little next year. However, I will meet my Goodreads reading challenge, unless something happens.

I was out of work so i should have nailed it and read all their sequels, run offs etc but discovered the library so read completely different books!

message 39: by John (new)

John | 44 comments Helen wrote: "I,, discovered the library so read completely different books!"

Hear you on libraries. Several on holds that were weeks wait came up and switched my path. And of course they all showed up near the same time so pressure to finish in 14 days.

Made a dent on unread series so switching this year to making a dent in anthologies/collections/standalone short stories. At least one short fiction a day.

Probably pick up a series or two later as have several Brandon Sanderson yet to complete and another Stormbringer novel due 3rd/4th quarter.

Time to start a 2020 thread with hopeful/wishful thinking I will reduce the TBR pile.

Nope, not really.

Found another group with Hugo and Nebula award novels so my TBR went up again. Turns out that I not very good at letting go of collecting and cataloging :)

So met part of my goal for this challenge cause I did read some of the d**n books and plan on many more for this year.
