I nominate Tales of Terror and Mystery by Arthur Conan Doyle. Most of us have sampled the Sherlock Holmes stories so I think it would be interesting to read some of his stories without Mr. Holmes.

nice one.

nice one, adding The Collected Stories of Eudora Welty to the list of nominations

I'd like to nominate one I read a few years ago, a collection of F.Scott Fitzgerald stories, Bernice Bobs Her Hair and Other Stories. I thought Fitzgerald really had a great sense of humor in writing some of the stories. The collection includes one of his classics, "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz."

I'd really like to read more of his short stories since I am enjoying Tales so much.
I'd like to nominate Nine Stories by J.D. Salinger. Many people believe this collection is his best writing, not Catch 22.

It's been a while since I've caught up with the group. But I couldn't resist this topic. I nominate The Long Valley by John Steinbeck. This is a collection of twelve short stories all taking place in the Salinas valley. Better known for his novels, Steinbeck's short stories are stunning, especially, "White Chrysanthemums," "The Murder," and "The Harness." The collection appeared in 1938, the year following publication of Of Mice and Men. Steinbeck put the anthology together at the urging of long time friend, Pat Covici, who published Steinbeck's works from 1934 until 1964.
Too Much Happiness by Alice Munro. She's one of the most impressive short story authors I've read. Ever since I read this collection, I've been meaning to get my hands on one of her other collections. Her stories seem to pack so much into so few pages, that they seem like stand-alone novels. So much eye for detail and language!

Looks like we have a few classics here, any more contemporary nominations?

I've lurked in the shadows of this group for some time primarily for the challenge read, but as a short story junkie, I will likely read along this month. Some great choices there for sure. If you are looking for an additional contemporary nomination, I could certainly add Volt by Alan Heathcock. It's hard-boiled, but not in the typical fashion. Violent- yes, but there's a lesson in almost every story. Will not fit everyone's bill, but this is an introduction to what I (and many others) feel will be one of the lasting voices in modern literature. He's quick to the marrow.
