That this is hard to characterize is part of its quality, but if you have read him enough, you get a feel for it. I recommend 'The Trial' too. Of course 'having a nightmarishly complex, bizarre, or illogical quality' is not a false description, but it does not do justice to his psychological realism or his hidden logic. I have written something I consider to be somewhat Kafkaesque, The Death of Monsieur Bourbaki, and yet it is difficult to say what that means!
