Ella Adderly shows up at Charles’ funeral and gives the impression they had a relationship but no one could believe that could be true based on her looks and age. Were you persuaded by their logic? What conclusions were you forming at that time?

Phrynne | 607 comments I assumed she was from the asylum but had no idea of what part she was going to play in the story.

Robin (robinmy) | 1214 comments I figured she was an escaped patient from the asylum and was delusional.

They certainly influenced my opinion of her. I didn’t know what to make of her at the time. She didn’t seem like a mistress and her connection to Virgil wasn’t established yet. I was utterly confused.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments It seemed like an odd addition to the story and didn't really end up adding much, if anything. I never considered her as a true red herring because she never had access to Charles' house.

More like a confusing diversion. Her only role was to answer the question of why he did the Adderlys helped him get the job.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments It was a weird red-herring.
It seemed like a redundant repetition of Tom Brandt's murder and the idea that unmarried women who give in to depression and hysteria become stalkers.

Good point, Lauren.
