Spoilers in here. I read it somewhere between 1997 and 2001 (long time) and it seemed to be an old book by then already perhaps form the 80's maybe older. A young lady with no past/no family is transported to ancient Ireland and befriends a princess/queen. There is some kind of adventure/danger in the story. At some point there is a man in the story who is part of the conflict. Spoilers here: The man and the princess/queen turn out to be the parents of the woman who was transported to ancient times.

Maybe The Singing Stone -- I haven't finished it, but the main character has no family and definitely goes back to ancient Ireland and befriends a mysterious young girl -- which is as far as I got.

You're welcome! Melling wrote a bunch of other books too, with similar themes, and at least one (The Druid's Tune) is I think in the same setting although maybe another time period.

I was surprised to find there were more books by the same author. The Singing Stone is no longer available at my library. But that book was one that made me want to write.
