SOLVED. Book set in Israel, written between 1950 - 2000. A scene about a "Jewish Defense League" type group

I think I read this book some time after 1980, but the book could be from before that. I was sure the scene is from EXODUS, but it isn't.

I think the scene is from the end of the book, but am not sure. One of the Israeli characters says to one of the American characters, who has just said something about that there never will be a Holocaust in America, "I will come over there to save you. So when you see me in the street in America, please turn away and do not show that you recognize me." This is a paraphrase, i am sure i do not remember it exactly. I seem to remember it has something to do with some Jewish Defense League - like organization.

Please, does this sound familiar to anyone? it is driving me crazy!
