SOLVED. Children's book about boy whose mother died of cancer and he grows feathered wings [s]

The boy lives in some sort of orphanage. When he grown wings, someone tries to cut them off, but he is saved just in time by three fallen angels. One of them looks like a porcupine. The fallen angels send the boy to heaven, I believe. He arrives through a river and is rescued from the river by 'people' fishing.
