hmmm...

magic-realism (view spoiler)[ so the style of magic realism is not my favorite genre. actually, I really dislike it.

BUT it's working here so far because the author just seems to use it to play up the similarities to Like Water for Chocolate (oh man i didn't like that book. have you read it?) anyway, it's not too bad here so I'm enjoying this so far (hide spoiler)]

Houseplant (view spoiler)[ I love the grandma and uncle big. they are adorable and also...a little wacky. I love their unique personalities - but I couldn't imagine a house covered in green lady mermaid aliens. lol (hide spoiler)]

road-reading (view spoiler)[ Ha! LOL I've never heard it called this but have you seen people do this?? I totally have. I've walked around my house like this, but not down a road. I love that their neighbors had to slow down as to not hit them when they were too distracted reading to actually walk on the side of the road!! (hide spoiler)]

Bails (view spoiler)[ really does sound like a ray of sunshine and someone that seemed to affect everyone she met. I'm so sad for Toby
and I know this is common - when 2 people lose someone, they reach out to each other in order to remember who they lost and it's the only time they don't feel guilty for feeling happy - because they are happy in their memory of the one they lost

What did you think of the boys? And her grief in the form she expressed it? I thought the author did a great job!

No problem Trisha, I just finished it recently. I loved it for the most part actually.

I loved both of them.(view spoiler)[ One of them to comfort her in her depression and one to help her see happiness in the world. Although, I think Toby could have been just there for her as a friend because he was still in love with Bailey. I felt so so bad for Toby though. First her and Toby was married, then she's pregnant and she dies as well. Joe kinda seemed like a player in the beginning but he proved that he really did love Lennie (hide spoiler)]

I loved it. (view spoiler)[ the story was beautifully written. I liked how the story was written in some poems and diary entries. I liked how the author didn't do the standard writing out everything her the girl is in her grief. (hide spoiler)]

I did love (view spoiler)[ that the author was respectful of what she was going through
that she wasn't handling her grief a way that most people would deem "okay"
but I never felt like the author shamed Lennie for her kissing both boys back to back
I loved that. I have so much respect for the author for doing that (hide spoiler)]

Toby (view spoiler)[ I felt so bad for him too. He loved Bailey and being with Lennie helped him remember her
but yeah...they were definitely reaching out to each other for all the wrong reasons (hide spoiler)]

Joe (view spoiler)[ I know, I worried at first that he didn't have good intentions either
but I loved how he started showing up each day but didn't have any expectations of Lennie - he just let her be. I loved Joe for that (hide spoiler)]

poems/notes/letters (view spoiler)[ I loved how those started a lot of the chapters
and I loved the added note that we were seeing what Joe was cataloging because he was collecting them. I thought that was great. I think these little notes added a much deeper meaning to the bond the sisters had (hide spoiler)]

but (view spoiler)[ the magic-realism dreamlike quality....I really dislike that style of writing. so it was hard for me to really love this one. (hide spoiler)]

I'm so glad you loved it! This one has been on my TBR for a long time and it's bounced on and off. I'm so glad I finally got a chance to read it!

Yes(view spoiler)[ what Lennie was going through was very real and the author didn't make it too dramatic or too normal. It's so rare to find books that show how real grief is. I'm kinda on the line with the kissing part though. (hide spoiler)]

Toby(view spoiler)[ Yah they were not meant to be. But it did help both of them with their grief in a way so it was good to put that in the book (hide spoiler)]

Joe(view spoiler)[ Joe was really good for Lennie especially in the ways he helped her get through the grief. (hide spoiler)]

Magic(view spoiler)[ I liked it actually because the book itself was magical and beautiful in it's own way so I though that quality worked with the book. (hide spoiler)]

Yah, it was one of the MUCH better psychology books! Yah, me too!
