SOLVED. YA - story told in different time periods about a man/boy who protected a girl/woman in each time period. I believe there was some kid of religious sacrifice that had to be made in one time periods. [s]

My memory of this book is vague. I read it in Summer 2014 for a college course on YA lit. I believe the cover was purple.

More details: one of the stories is about a man who is trying to protect his daughter, they live in a cabin I believe.
Another story is about possibly a king and queen who are eventually murdered or sacrificed. I believe at some point they realize they have lived multiple lives and as they are dying they say they will see each other next lifetime.
