Howdy all. I can't remember the name of a short story that I read in the late 1970's or early 1980's. There is a military (and science?) outpost on a very hostile planet that is mostly nature - jungle / forest. It is highly dangerous to leave the outpost since the local, otherworldly wildlife kill humans quite readily. The humans in the garrison's mixed-gender military unit undertake regular combat patrols to kill the animals in hopes that they develop a fear of humans, but it does not work and humans are regularly killed by local wildlife.
It is an isolated posted that takes a heavy toll psychologically as well as physically, and one of the ways the soldiers deal with this is a game of sneaking outside the gates unarmed and running one lap of the external perimeter. It's a dangerous game and some soldiers die doing this stunt. But if you make it you obtain a sort of hero status. The highest honours go to those who do the run naked!
Does anyone remember this short story? I've searched here and on Google but nothing comes up. Thanks kindly!
