Puddlyduck | 10 comments A remake of The Stand has been rumoured to be in the works for a number of years now, but in the last week or so I've read a lot of reviews about Matthew McConaughey being approached to play Randall Flagg.

Obviously nothing is set in stone, but I wondered what other constant readers thought about this casting choice? For me, I think the actor has the chops to play the aggressive, scarily charismatic madman's personality. However, I don't know if he would come off as physically threatening as I've imagined Flagg to be.

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments I like the idea. MxConaghey can b charming and sinister enough and can certainly bulk up for the role.

Amanda | 10 comments Oh that works for me. I can just see it! But the casting of Frannie, Harold, Stu etc is so important too!

Daniel | 24 comments Amanda wrote: "Oh that works for me. I can just see it! But the casting of Frannie, Harold, Stu etc is so important too!"

Personally, I still think Senise was an excellent choice for Stu. He's probably too old now.

Amanda | 10 comments He was very good, but yes I agree probably too old now. I'm now trying to cast the rest in my head with today's batch of actors. I'm struggling!!

message 6: by Deb (new) - rated it 5 stars

Deb | 9 comments Before seeing him in Dallas Buyers Club I would have said "No way!" Now I'm all for it.

I didn't like Sinise or Ringwold in the original. Looking forward to seeing who they choose for those characters.

Amanda | 10 comments Yes, Dallas Buyers Club was astonishing and that's also why he would make a great Flagg. The only thing that concerns me about the remake is that they want to fit it all into one 3 hour film. I just hope they don't lose the sense of the journey.

Puddlyduck | 10 comments I think it's the way I imagine Flagg moving around in the book that doesn't match up. In my head he kind of has a looming presence. And although it's not in a The Stand, who can forget the way Flagg leaps up the stairs after Roland in Eye of the Dragon?!

Saying that though, I can't think of any other casting choice at the moment...

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments I could see Ed Norton for Stu and Christian Bale for Larry

message 10: by Jeff (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments Or Hell...even Bale for Flagg

Amanda | 10 comments I'm afraid Bale would be my last choice for anything! That's the difficulty in casting these types of books. All the fans have such strong opinions in their heads about what would be perfect, and it's all down to personal preference. However it is great fun thinking about it :-)

message 12: by Jeff (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments Affleck for Stu?

Amanda | 10 comments Yeah, I could see that!!

Puddlyduck | 10 comments I'd love to Stanley Tucci's version of Glen Bateman :)

message 15: by Jeff (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments Like Tucci....maybe Kevin Kline?

message 16: by Puddlyduck (last edited Aug 30, 2014 01:40PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Puddlyduck | 10 comments That'd work too! They both pull off shrewd and reservedly compassionate characters really well. (Glen Bateman is one of my favourite SK characters!)

Edit: I'd also love to see Morgan Freeman in this role.

message 17: by Jeff (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments Who for Frannie?

message 18: by Jeff (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments Bill Murray for Stu as well...John Goodman for Ralph....and Ron Livingston for Nick.

Amanda | 10 comments Mia Wasikowska?

message 20: by Jeff (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments Mureay for Bateman i mean lol

message 21: by Jeff (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments Sure....maybe Zooey Deschanel

Amanda | 10 comments Murray for Bateman would be brilliant, and I meant Mia for Frannie!

Kathy | 1 comments I wasn't all that satisfied with Jamey Sheridan as Flagg. I'm excited about this possible casting for Flagg. I can definitely see him fit. I was secretly hoping for Kevin Spacey.

message 24: by Jeff (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments Spacey is only like 5'6"-5'7"...too small. Though he could do Bateman as well. Bradley Cooper for Flagg?

Kandice | 4387 comments Jeffrey DeMunn would be the perfect Glenn, in my opinion. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0218810/

I was happy with Sheridan as Flagg, but could see McConaughey in the role.

Sinise as Stu was perfect, but too old now. Maybe Justin Kirk? http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005095/

I hated Ringwald as Frannie. I'm not sure who would be good for that part.

message 26: by Jeff (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments Like both those picks Kandice. Loved Justin Kirk on WEEDS. I am hoping they make him a star and the role of Stu could do it. What about Dustin Hoffman for Glen?

Puddlyduck | 10 comments Robert Knepper (T-bag from the series Prison Break) would make an awesome Flagg!
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0460694/

I could definitely see actor Giovanni Ribisi as Harold. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000610/

Doreen Petersen | 252 comments My personal preference for Randall Flagg is Hugh Jackman.

message 29: by Jeff (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments I could see them casting one star and a bunch of character actors. maybe Mickey Rourke for Flagg?

Puddlyduck | 10 comments Doreen wrote: "My personal preference for Randall Flagg is Hugh Jackman."

I think this could really work. Maybe it's because of his theatre/dance roots, but Jackman is really good at working his body language.

Randy Harmelink | 32 comments Doreen wrote: "My personal preference for Randall Flagg is Hugh Jackman."

Then lets get Joss Whedon as the director and we can have a musical version of The Stand.

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments I could deal well with McConaughey as Flagg. At first I was like, no way, but the more I think about it, I think it could work very well.

Really Randy? I was just expressing my opinion. No need to get nasty about it.

message 34: by Beth (new) - rated it 5 stars

Beth (1tuffcookie) | 55 comments I think Andrew Lincoln would make a good Stu Redmen.

message 35: by Randy (new)

Randy Harmelink | 32 comments I apologize if you thought it was nasty. I meant it as a joke. I should have added the ":)" at the end.

Kandice | 4387 comments Beth wrote: "I think Andrew Lincoln would make a good Stu Redmen."

Oooh! He would be god. Who could Norman Reedus play? I really mean that. They are great together.

message 37: by Beth (new) - rated it 5 stars

Beth (1tuffcookie) | 55 comments I could see Norman Reedus as Nick that would be awesome!

message 38: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 31, 2014 06:18PM) (new)

I love the idea of McConaughey as Flagg!!! Hugh Jackman was another good suggestion, he could pull it off. Jeffrey DeMunn was a good suggestion for Glenn and Andrew Lincoln would also work for Stu.

I guess I should add a couple suggestions of my own... how about James Franco as Larry, Jonah Hill as Harold, Timothy Olyphant or Josh Brolin as Stu, Kit Harrington as Nick, and maybe Paul Dano as the Trashcan Man?

If you really want to shoehorn Norman Reedus in there somewhere... maybe Lloyd? But then he wouldn't get many scenes with Andrew Lincoln's Stu in that case.

message 39: by Kit★ (new) - added it

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments I could definitely see Andrew Lincoln as Stu, I'd like that :D

Norman Reedus would be awesome as Lloyd.

Vheissu | 35 comments Christopher Heyerdahl is super scary in Hell on Wheels, and might be good as Flagg. Heck, Anson Mount would make a pretty good Stu Redman.

Kandice | 4387 comments Timothy Olyphant would make an excellent Stu!!!!

message 43: by Beth (new) - rated it 5 stars

Beth (1tuffcookie) | 55 comments Norman Reedus as Lloyd sounds better. Timothy Olyphant would make a great Stu as well!

Puddlyduck | 10 comments Thinking about it, Famke Janssen would make a really good Nadine.

Kandice | 4387 comments Puddlyduck wrote: "Thinking about it, Famke Janssen would make a really good Nadine."

But she's soooo tall! 5'11.5". Isn't Nadine supposed to be physically small? She's a great actress, though, so could certainly play some part and do it well.

Famke made me think of Dougray Scott (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0779084/) as Stu. Maybe?

Kandice | 4387 comments Ooh! Landon Liboiron would make a great Larry!

Dan (dan2345) | 170 comments Is this for real? I hope so, cause I'm reading The Stand right now and it is awesome. Also, I read about the remake on the internet and they said they want to make it rated R and three hours long.

I would be very happy with a Stand remake. I was not impressed by that first mini-series. I don't think that Matthew McConaughey could play Randall Flagg though. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a good actor but he's played to many good guys. You need someone who's good at being evil. I don't know, Stephen King said he wanted Clint Eastwood to play Flagg, but he's too old now...lol.

message 48: by Jeff (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments John c reily as tom cullen. mark wahlberg as stu? christopher meloni for flagg?

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

While reading The Stand a couple months ago, I pictured Flagg as Gerard Butler as he was in Dracula 2000. Sexy and bad!

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh yeah, I couldn't stand Molly Ringwald as Frannie. I have never liked her as an actress and she's not what I would picture as the perfect Frannie. I'm actually watching this miniseries on Netflix right now.
