Which edition are you reading?

I have 2 editions of IOC: One translated by William Creasy and one translated by William Griffin.

I'm thinking of reading through this season with Bill Griffin's translation, because he is a very funny writer, and I am in a jolly mood.

What are y'all using? I've heard that the Ronald Knox translation is one of the best. Anyone using that one?

The version I am using is a reprint of 1905 publication translated by William Benham. I am not sure what translated editions are the best. When I was looking for Nook version I looked at every edition and who was the translator(s). Most of them were reprints of William Benham's translated edition.

I'm using the Dover Thrift Edition which I must have bought a number of years ago for a dollar or two. The translators are Croft and Bolton.

I just went to look for my book (was my Mom's)...I always thought it said Imitation of Christ...now I see it is called Following of Christ - The Following of Christ in four books by Thomas A Kempis. A new translation from the original Latin, to which are added practical reflections and a prayer at the end of each chapter. Edited by Rev. J.M. Hi - I’m new to the group and really enjoying this book. I got the book from my local library and it is the Ronald Knox translation. It is very well done. Language is clear and inspiring- very user friendly. I am looking to buy a copy of it but not having much luck finding it online. If anyone knows where it can be purchased please post.

Karen, welcome to the group. I did not know Ronald Knox translated it. It appears to be out of print, but you can buy a used copy at Amazon. Here:

I haven't been keeping up with the group reads here. (I am still only halfway through Purgatorio!) But I'm going to try to join in for the Imitation of Christ. I'm going to read the edition we published; it's a translation by one of our sisters. It's also a lovely binding. (Here it is on Amazon.

Sister, that will be awesome if you join us. The Dante summaries and comments will always be there for you to follow. I'm behind myself. I should be wrapping up Paradiso this week. But the immediate attention will be The Imitation of Christ. If I was looking for a hard copy I would buy the one your fellow Pauline Sister translated.

I am using two different translations. The first is Rev. William Benham. The second is Joseph Tylenda, S.J. The language in the Benham translation is beautiful and transporting. However, I can more easily understand the Tylenda translation, so I feel like it will be more helpful to me at this time.

I'm surprised at how many different translations exist. Perhaps I shouldn't be for such a popular and historic work.
