i am looking for a young adult book that was based in a future world where people lived in villages in the trees. i think they were on dirt platforms between the Forrest floor and the foliage above them. it was about a boy with a musical ability and he was the only one who could use this wind instrument. i think he was headed to the desert near the end of the book. i read it 2 years ago when the second in the series had not come out yet.

edit: the ability to find and use the wind instrument was an important part of the book. this was a fairly modern book as it was the first in an ongoing series that was not yet compleated
