All I remember is that she was traveling to Europe with her sister and parents for a summer and that's why she was writing letters to all of her friends. She first started having medical issues when her monthly bleeding was super heavy (which freaked her out) and was eventually diagnosed with a serious condition which resulted in her dying. Celebration of her life and friendships.

Oh, sorry, it's been forever but she wrote to three other friends I think. All girls. It's based on a true story (I think!?) so I think it was in the intro/ had a foreword from her family. But other than that it's not a main plot point until the end.
