Question from a non-native speaker for the expression "MAUI WOWIE"

Alaska looked around for a moment, then walked to the bookshelf. She stared at it, then pulled out the King James Bible, and there—a purple bottle of Maui Wowie wine cooler. “How clever,” she said as she twisted off the cap. She drank it down in two long sips, and then proclaimed, “Maui WOWIE!”

After some research the expression is mainly related to a type of weed for all I know. But How is it related to a wine cooler and later the fact that Alaska proclaimed the expression? Does the expression has some hidden meaning?

I believe you should ask the author that one.

I think Maui Wowie is used here as some kind of a brand and the expression is just well..an expression. Alaska just used the opportunity to express her delight in a 'pun-ny' way.

OK. Not sure where the confusion comes in so forgive any part of this post that is superfluous...

Wine Cooler - A drink that is a wine-based alcoholic drink that is generally for those with an unsophisticated taste in wine. It has some of the best aspects of soda pop but with the ability to give one an alcohol buzz. New drinkers are often put off by the strong undiluted tastes of many alcoholic beverages and this is a way of "easing into" drinking while the palate becomes accustomed to these tastes.

Maui Wowie may refer to any THC laced marijuana plant that has a better than average ability to give one a buzz.

Hence a Mowie Wowie wine cooler would be a commercial attempt to play to the unsophisticated tastes of those who favor wine coolers while claiming a better than average ability to give them a buzz. I don't think that there actually is a "Mowie Wowie" brand of wine cooler but... why not?

Maui Wowie is a franchise drink cart business here in the States that sells alcoholic frozen drinks at stadiums and sporting events. Don't think it's sold in stores but that's the reference I inferred.
