I'm partway through
The Rise of Magicks, #3 in the series. Really well done trilogy; so freaky how close it is to this pandemic we're going through. Their virus is much deadlier, however.

She Doesn't Want the Worms! Ella no quiere los gusanos: A Mystery is a delightful early language book by Karl Beckstrand and talented illustrator David Hollenbach. Kids will laugh and learn Spanish (and so did I) in this cute book.

The Sympathizer by Asian-American author Viet Thanh Nguyen won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, so I thought War + Big prize = Heavy (UGH). But I loved a preview chapter of his follow-up, The Committed, so I bought this first book and loved it! Some brutality, yes, but funny, informative and thought-provoking.
Plus, it's easy to read. You don't need a thesaurus or a history degree. 😊

FinishedMy Dear Hamilton: A Novel of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton last night for book club. Really enjoyed the book and seeing the revolution through a woman's eyes.

I was wishy-washy about this one. It kept calling to me whenever I'd see it but I was of the same mind as you (War + Big prize = Heavy (UGH)). Thanks for your review; I've now put it on my WL.
Brenda wrote: "That was an excellent trilogy Meg!"It really was; I was happy with how it wrapped up minus a couple of deaths of good people that were hard for me to take. The paranormal/fantasy aspect was a really good one.

I have that one on the tbr, though it may be a while before I can start it. If you get to it before I do, I'll be happy to know what you think of it.

I enjoyed the book as well. Very informative
I am reading Paris Is Always a Good Idea
by Jenn McKinlay. Fun easy to read book. I am quite enjoying it.
I finished an entertaining historical mystery: An Extravagant Death
by Charles Finch. This is part of a series. My 4 star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just finished. Not cozy, but a mystery - Donna Leon's latest: Transient Desires
Up to her usual standard, i.e. wonderful.
Finally made it past the halfway mark — and nearly to the 3/4 mark — in Pearl Cove. Amazing how much reading one can accomplish when one is actually home. 🙄
That sounds like a good read Heather - have you read the first 2 in the series? And yes, being home really helps ;)
I loved Trent Dalton's first book (Boy Swallows Universe), which was largely autobiographical. There's no question he can write. All Our Shimmering Skies is good, but I was spoiled by what I know he is capable of.

Brenda — I have about 104 pages left. I was a few pages shy of the 3/4 goal before bed last night, but when your arm keeps dropping, and you’ve read the same paragraph three times...it’s time to put the book down and go to sleep. 😳 It has been a good read, though. Learning quite a bit about the pearl trade, lol. And yes, I have read the first two books, though it’s been quite a while, and also have book four in Mount TBR. Should finish “Pearl” today.
Heather L wrote: "Finally made it past the halfway mark — and nearly to the 3/4 mark — in Pearl Cove. Back in the day there was a group of authors that I read, anything and everything they put out, in different time periods. Happy memories!
Finis! 😀
Meg — Elizabeth Lowell has long been an auto-buy for me, too—as are/were many suspense writers who got their start in romance, such as Catherine Coulter, Iris Johansen, Kay Hooper and Nora Roberts. I still enjoy their suspense, but some authors are so prolific it’s hard to keep up. Which means I have plenty of options when I’m in the mood for a good rom-suspense.
When the “Donovan” series came out, I read the first two as soon as they were released in paperback (couldn’t afford the hardcovers), but then during the release of the last two books there was a lot of family stuff going on, and not as much reading. Still, I’m surprised it took me so long to get to Pearl Cove.
“Pearl” fits multiple prompts for the Popsugar Reading Challenge. I’m using it for “gem in the title,” but it also fits “set in multiple countries” (3), a “book with three generations,” and “bestseller from the 1990s.” I suppose if you’re a jeweler or into jewelry it would also fit “current/dream job” as well, and fit “zodiac sign” for anyone who is an Aries.

Good job with all the Popsugar options! I'm totally wowed!.
I started back then with almost the same authors. I'd only been reading now and again; so busy with young kids and moving countries. I happened to wander into a small used bookstore when things settled, and was totally lost. Didn't know what I wanted to read and by whom. The owner was so good as sussing (sp?) out what would work, and lead me right to historical romance: Julie Garwood, Catherine Coulter, Amanda Quick, and Iris Johanssen were first. I followed them to their contemporary works, and added Linda Howard and Nora Roberts to the mix. Moved into their romantic suspense. And then added some more authors. Wow, I was in heaven. We all know what a tbr mountain I have nowadays with cozies. Okay, tbr mountain range. 😂 But I love it!
Meg, we have read a lot of the same authors! Add Johanna Lindsey to the list as well. I still have about a dozen of hers to catch up on, too.
Having such a huge TBR mountain has been a blessing the last couple years. Most of what I have read were books I already had, spanning several genres. The few exceptions were borrowed from a friend, found free online, or were ones I found in a local Little Free Library (15 within easy walking distance).
Up next are a couple short books for this month’s classic group reads, Gooseberries by Anton Chekhov and The Giver by Lois Lowry. The latter is a reread for me. I want to finally get to Son, last book in the series this year, and figure rereading The Giver will set me up nicely for that.

Oh, yea, how could I forget Johanna Lindsey? Yay to the fact that we share a lot of the same authors!
I wish I could say that having a huge tbr is a total blessing, I mean, it is, and I've covered a lot of challenges with what I've got. The thing is...it hasn't stopped me from buying more! Oh, heck, it's one of life's little pleasures so I don't really begrudge it.
Brenda wrote: "It's annoying we can't stay awake as long as we'd like!"
LOL — isn’t that the truth! 🙄
Meg— Yeah, having a sprawling TBR pile hasn’t stopped me from adding more books to the towering mountains, but I have bought a lot fewer books so far this year. Of course, that just means the wishlist keeps getting longer.

I think that goes along with, “in my defense, I was left unsupervised.” 😀

Since finishing Pearl Cove, I have read six short stories. Four were by the brothers Grimm, one was “Gooseberries by Anton Chekhov (go figure—a Russian story that’s depressing), and this afternoon I finished “Black Canaan” by Robert E. Howard (creepy!).
Am now about to start my reread of The Giver by Lois Lowry.

I'm trying to get caught up on the series. I've started # 27 and I have # 28 on the list to read for May.

I'm (sort of) ashamed to say I've had them for about 20 years. They're in a box with other unread TBRs. With 26 to go, I'm thinking they'll be there for a long time. :o)
