Awakening Her Beast

I was taken because I was poor. The rich and powerful call my people Nis which is short for Nis'sahāya, which means hopeless. They see us as… disposable. We are the first who enter the Trials of the Tigers every year, hopeful to become a Magi. It is the only possible path out of poverty.

But, in a thousand years, not one Nis has ever succeeded. Only the children of the rich become Magi and are granted a seat at the Rakshasa’s table.

Until, against all expectations… I did.

Now, I need to become a worse monster than the Rakshasa who supposedly protect Pannikar from the Hungry Dead who plague our city.

But… do they protect us, or do they just feed on us?

I am beginning to suspect that the Tigers-who-walk-like-men… are the true monsters in Panikkar. Just because they talk like men, doesn’t make them a man. Wielding magic doesn’t grant a Tiger a man’s moral code or ethics. Rakshasa don’t cherish love like a treasure, or give compassion to the less fortunate.

Everything tastes like prey when you are a Tiger.

And… Everyone... tastes good.

My name is Jayanti, and I will survive their trials and contests, even if that means becoming what I fear the most… A Rakashi, a sister of their clan.
