Read in 1990s, possibly published in 1980s. H an orphan with huge magical potential but all his spells go wrong. Ends up on a quest when his mentor is killed, first part of which is to find and free a stallion which was magically imprisoned in a carousel ride. Next part is to find the heir of a king and free a sleeping princess who wears 10 magic rings - the first book in the trilogy ends with the unexpected outcome of this venture.
