SOLVED. book about student who tries to poison girlfriend [s]

When I was in 7th grade in the late 1960's, my English teacher read to the class the first chapter of a book about a young man who is a senior in college (or possibly high school). He finds out that his girlfriend is pregnant. He panics, and decides to slip her some poison (possibly on the advice of a friend?). After he gets his girlfriend to ingest some of the poison, he goes home to wait for the bad news. He is stunned when she shows up at his door the next day, apparently in good health.

(I always meant to read the whole book later, but I couldn't remember the title.)
