Why is Turtle's crutch her pigtail?

The book said that Turtle's pigtail is her crutch, not her mouth. I would have understood it if her crutch was her mouth, but it isn't. Anyone can explain?
I think it might have been more to do with her youth being her crutch - the pigtails representing youth.
In the book, the CRUTCH reference was a way of saying that a person hides behind an image that they WANT other people to see.
Turtle's crutch is her pigtails because they are the gateway to the "tough" things she does like kick people's shins. They represent the touch person she wants to be and wants people to see her as. But inside, she is upset because she wants to be taken seriously, have her mother pay attention to and like her, and have a normal name instead of Tabitha-Ruth.
