I read this book for the first time in the the early 00s but I’m pretty sure it was my dad’s so it was probably purchased in the 60s-70s. I remember the plot very well- three knights are on their way to save a dying princess. The king has put out a decree that whoever can save her can have her hand in marriage. The knights run into a troll (or something like that) that has his beard stuck under a rock. They cut off his beard with their swords and the troll gives them a choice of three birds in thanks. One knight chooses a golden bird that gives him gold coins whenever he wants, the second knight chooses an iron bird that can summon warriors when the knight needs it and the third knight chooses the plain sparrow. The golden bird and the iron bird prove to be very helpful to the knights whilst the third knight just enjoys the natural beauty and song of the regular sparrow. I don’t want to spoil the end of the story and I figure if you know the story you’ll recognize it from everything else.
The version I had had really beautiful, detailed illustrations. It was a hard cover with a dust cover. It was sort of tan colored with an illustration of the princess on the front.
