One Kick
question
What do you think of this new series?

I thought Bishop was a bit much in the beginning but grew to like him, and James and Kick are great characters.

For a book that is named "kick" and rides entirely on this character , Kick is the weakest link in the book. While the book starts describing her as this self made and strong heroine, it eventually ends up portraying her as the weakest. In fact so weak that Paris Hilton would have appeared Rambo in front of her in the climax and the crucial situations of the book. Bishop on the other hand was a mystery and true delight. the book should have been named Bishop
i loathe Kick as a character and for bringing down a potentially good book.

I loved this new series. Cain has a very interesting take on the psychology of damaged people which I find keeps my attention throughout. It certainly felt like there is more to come and I think Bishop will be the linchpin for future adventures.
I really liked the story and the characters. I wanted more on Bishops past or more info about his life but some things are best kept a mystery. But we're gonna find out in the 2nd book hopefully.
One of my favorite things about Chelsea Cain is how delicately she handles two crucial issues:
1. The psychology of damaged people.
2. The connection between abusers and their victims.
In the case of "One Kick" (as in the Archie Sheridan series) she does a really wonderful job creating a heroine who's not super-powerful, but really damaged-- it's just that her damage gives her some additional skills and insights. And her painful yet believable connection to Mel is handled in a deft and thoughtful way.
So anyway...what I'm trying to say is I really loved the book. A great beginning to what will hopefully be a long new series.

Glad to see her start a new series. Great story and I particularly like it since I live here in the Portland area.
I absolutely loved this book! It as intense and emotional. Kick was such a great character. I can't wait to read more of this series. I haven't read anything else by Chelsea Cain yet, but I will now.
This could have been a good 'novel' and if I knew it was going to be the start of a series, I would not have started reading it. If I wanted a soap opera I could watch TV.
The lead character is a contrived toughened young woman but turns out to be shallow and weak.

Hard to add anything else to Raymond's comment. Pretty much covers it.
Took the trip down I-5 from Portland to Salem the other day(not to the penitentiary!)and had to laugh remembering Cain's description of the ride.
