Pien | 602 comments Thanks Starman for everything! I’ve build a wonderful snailb&b with fresh leaves daily. A cat is walking the perimeter for birds. It’s for you!

I could maybe help out as a moderator if need be. I’m on most days anyway. Let me know. No offense at all will be taken if I’m not needed.

That would be brilliant, Erin. StarMan was keeping things afloat around here. I'm only just getting back into this. I think if you're able to help stay on top of quarterly reads, put up the occassional poll and respond to comments that would be a great help. It's pretty chill, no pressure. And I'll do some of that stuff too.

Yes, StarMan was certainly a star moderator! And I’ll be honest, I’m not going to be able to “moderate” at his level. (He’s especially good at the technology side, all the ins and outs of Goodreads, which I’m not up on.) But I’ll be happy to help to the best of my ability. I can certainly handle polls and putting up discussions :-)

Awesome, Erin. I've made you a moderator. Tim and I agreed to forgo the BOM this year, since I knew I was going to be a poor mod the first half of the year. If you miss it you're welcome to bring it back. Otherwise, we can work around each other. 😁

Thanks Keli!
Was there ever much activity for the BotM? I read a number of them awhile back but seem to recall there wasn’t much of a discussion for each, so I’m content to let it be. (I’m not seeing much yet for Anna Karenina this year either 😆)
I’ve marked my planner for the end of the 2nd Quarterly Read poll so I’ll be sure to post the discussion thread after it ends. And if The Song of Achilles wins, I will likely read it and hopefully be able to facilitate a discussion.
I’m wondering… should we maybe just designate the winner as a “3rd Quarter Read” since we’re almost at the third quarter? Then we can get back on track from there for the 4th quarter?
I feel like a new challenge might be fun to try to generate some activity, though I don’t have any ideas off the top of my head.

Maybe a collective summer reading alphabet challenge? Like we work together to try to read a book for each letter of the alphabet, using either title or author’s first or last name? For instance, I could complete “A” with the book Ace of Spades that I finished a week ago. Someone else could complete “B” and yet someone else could complete “C.” Participants are welcome to complete as many letters as they want with the aim of having the full alphabet done by the end of the summer.

Let me know what you think… I won’t be upset if that doesn’t strike a chord with anyone.

Erin, I am up for anything. If you have an idea, go for it. As long as it fits the Snail ethos, slow and stress free, do what you like.

I do like your idea of just making the 2nd quarter book the 3rd quarter book. Though, maybe for clarity's sake, make it the 2nd and 3rd quarter read.

Discussions are tricky. StarMan often posted questions, particularly in the BOMs, to get things rolling but it wouldn't always take off.

You may want to poll our memebers about direction. See what types of discussions or challenges would they like.

I'll do a newsletter this month saying thanks and goodbye to StarMan, welcoming you, and mentioning our various polls and books. It probably won't be until Saturday night GMT. So if you want me to mention anything specific, let me know.

Sounds great Keli! Thanks!
I briefly touched base with my friend Pien from the group and she said she’s definitely up for the summer reading challenge. If you manage to get a newsletter out this weekend, I’ll launch it next week and create a separate discussion board for people to contribute ideas.
You can mention in my intro that I’ll be launching a cooperative summer reading challenge next week and to be on the lookout if anyone is interested.
Don’t know what all about me you might want to include, but I’m a stay at home mom in central Florida in the US who’s primary hobby is reading, with cross stitching as a close second. Let me know if there’s anything else you want to know.

Oh yes! That was quite awhile ago now, almost 3 years! I just went back to look it over again and was reminded of all the great challenges! I didn’t realize there had been so many!

I was just browsing through the myriad of discussion threads and came upon the monthly challenges from last year. They didn’t get much activity but they do look fun. If you happen to put a newsletter together soon, perhaps you might want to remind folks that they’re there? I don’t know if I’ll manage any of them for June since the month is half over, but I might try to tackle one for July.

Hi Erin, I came down with a big old cold at the weekend and am only just starting to feel normalish again. I am away this weekend so no newletter. But I'm going to aim at getting a newsletter out around the same day that our Quarterly read poll is finished.

No worries! It happens! (We’ve had Covid running rampant in our area lately…) Glad to hear you’re on the mend though! Doing the newsletter once we have a winner for the quarterly read sounds like a good idea anyway.
