It had been bright sunshine and light breezes for the last month, but now that George and Kerry were due to take their brand new convertible out for its inaugural test drive, the weather decided to take a drastic u-turn and chuck it down like nobody’s business.
“We can’t go out in that,” Kerry complained, “we’ll get drenched.”
“We could always put the roof up,” George suggested.
“Then what’s the point?” Kerry spat, “We bought a convertible so we could feel the sun shining on our skin, the wind blowing through our hair…” she looked at George’s thinning scalp, “…well, my hair, and now the weather decides to rain for the first time in over a month.”
“Maybe we could hold off until tomorrow,” George suggested. “Maybe the weather will improve by then.”
“And miss out on the first day of the holidays?” Kerry spat, “I don’t think so.”
“Then what do you suggest?” George asked.
“We’re going on this drive!” Kerry insisted, “and the weather better not get any wetter!”
“We can’t control the weather,” George said, but Kerry wasn’t listening. She picked up the keys and marched down to the garage where their brand new convertible was waiting for them. George sighed heavily and followed her.
Kerry climbed into the driver’s seat, putting on her leather driving gloves one at a time. George sat next to her, staring at the gloved.
“Do you have to wear those?” he asked.
“You have to go with the full look,” Kerry insisted, “the gloves are part of it.”
George sighed again as Kerry started the engine and the car whizzed through the garage doors and out into the rain.
“Come on, Kerry,” George complained, “it’s pelting it down. Put up the roof, willya?”
“I refuse to bow down to this stupid weather,” Kerry complained, gripping the steering wheel as she speeded up.
As the car tore down the country road, picking up speed, the rain seemed to get heavier. George winced as raindrops repeatedly hit him in the face, the speed they were travelling at turning the drops into a painful sheet that battered his skin.
“Can you please pull over?” George begged, “I can’t stand this rain for much longer.”
Kerry grit her teeth together, “I won’t let the rain beat me,” she muttered as the speedometer his 110 kilometres per hour.
George started to panic as his wife continued to push the car faster and faster, “We’ve got to stop, Kerry,” he said slowly, “this is out of control.”
Kerry turned to George as she pushed the car up to 140, “I won’t let the weather ruin my day!” she shouted, then turned back to the road to see a tree racing towards them.
Everything else happened at great speed; Kerry hit the brakes, the car spinning on the wet road and the side of the car colliding with the tree. Thankfully both George and Kerry had been wearing seatbelts or they would have been thrown clear of the vehicle. Their heads snapped forwards as the car ground to a halt, their eyes widening as they felt the engine sputter and die. They looked at each other, thankful… no, amazed to still be alive.
As they breathed heavily, astounded to have survived their near fatal crash, the rain began to peter out and stop. The clouds cleared, the sun showed its face for the first time that day, and a large rainbow spread across the sky.
George cleared his throat, rubbing his sore neck, “I guess we could have waited half an hour,” he smiled nervously.
Kerry glared at him, “Shut up, George!”
