Curious to see what they can do storywise, as details about her time are somewhat vague.
Wonder if she'll get new companions or just the squad we (kinda) saw during Flux.

Rick | 2260 comments The only thing they’ve said is that they’re being careful to fully coordinate with BBC to ensure they don’t tread on anything that might develop in the TV series. Which leads me to think we might not have seen the last of Jo Martin in the series. Jo Martin is the only cast member listed and no release dates have been made public. So it could be awhile yet.
The shortest I’ve seen them make an announcement for an upcoming release is just about a month before the street date, but it’s usually months before hand.

Oh well, I'll just start my notes now, in case Mr. Briggs needs any ideas.

Rick | 2260 comments And don’t forget Sacha Dhawan as The Master in:
Call Me Master 1 by Sacha Dhawan
Call Me Master 1
Call Me Master 2 by Sacha Dhawan
Call Me Master 2

Also announced with no predicted release date. I’m eagerly awaiting these as well. 😸

Now, if they announced a series featuring Commander Inston-Vee Vinder starring Jacob Anderson I’d be all set (alas, as he’s in the new Interview With the Vampire series, it likely won’t happen). But the know the actor would be keen to return to the character, he’s said in interviews he’s got ideas for a Vinder spin-off.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments A fanfic project I'm working on with another writer is using a lot of cosmic Marvel characters and he found an obvious Doctor Who clone that showed up in a single issue.

So, I'm getting to write (kinda, sorta) the Doctor in the MU.

message 1806: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Who’s the Doctor clone?
Or is the identity a secret?

message 1807: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Character named professor gamble
He showed up in an issue of power man and iron fist
Believe this only appearance

His “tardis” is a used bookstore, he combines two of my favorite things

message 1808: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments And here I’m I the middle of rereading Power Man and Iron Fist right now. I don’t remember that character. I’m on the lookout now. 😼

message 1809: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments I tracked the issue down for research
Want to say it’s #79

message 1810: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Yep, that’s it. I’d all but forgotten about that and I’d just reread it not that long ago in Power Man & Iron Fist Epic Collection, Vol. 2: Revenge!. And even wrote this in my review “Power Man and Iron Fist #78-79 wraps up Duffy and Gammill’s tenure on the series. The first of these sets up a story that will pay off a bit later, to finish off Duffy’s run, and the second is an honest-to-goodness homage to Doctor Who and the Daleks. Almost too fun to believe (4/5).” So yes, a one-off character, but clearly an homage to Doctor Who and the Dredlox, er Daleks. 😹😹😹

It's a fun little story.
Especially insane, as Luke and Danny are crazy choices as "Doctor Who companions"

Lots of potential, to take Gamble into the wider MU.

Sounds like it could be a lot of fun. 😸

Rick | 2260 comments AND with The Timeless Child twist, there’s no reason that Prof Gamble couldn’t be a pre-Hartnell incarnation. 😹

I've been pushing my co-creator to come up with 'Doctor Who' story ideas and then seeing what marvel characters fit in, as Gamble and his Tardis are the only 'Doctor Who elements I thought we should use.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments I'm very tired of people ranting that a movie and TV show is bad, and never mentioning that it was filmed during covid or the strike.

If your argument ignores a major fact, I'm done listening to you.
Seen it so many times, apparently it's become the common wisdom.

message 1816: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments These are probably the same people who see any form of inclusivity as “wokism.” So I’m thinking it’s not the common wisdom you mean, but … the common idiocy.

If it was just the idiots, i could live with it/ignore it, but actual reviewers I like have fallen into the rut and accepted it.

So annoying.

Rick | 2260 comments Travis wrote: "I'm very tired of people ranting that a movie and TV show is bad, and never mentioning that it was filmed during covid or the strike. ..."

So is it that they’re trading a film or show and ignoring that there were extra production complications due to Covid or the strikes, or is it that they are ignorant of when it was produced and not bothering to take that into account?

They have to be aware.
It's just easier/lazier to ignore those facts because they get in the way of the narrative.
I think too many reviewers good and bad have just bought into the perceived wisdom.

I just find myself listening to less review podcasts/ channels because of it.

message 1820: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Since I've been a little critical/grumpy lately, it's time to have some fun:
What classic monster would you like the new Doctor to encounter first?

We know he's getting a girl from now companion.
Who else would make a good companion?

My picks:
Companions:

Shirley: all that build up. Let her in the Tardis

A soldier of some kind: preferably historical. Want a bachelor Tardis

A robot: Bring back Kamelion! Or maybe a Movelion. That would be fun

Aliens ( we know Daleks will show up. Everybody gets them as a freebie)
Judoon (they are still annoyed about 13ths jailbreak)
Rutans/Sontarions
Cheetah people: Been too long. Bring them back.

message 1821: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Companion? Rose Noble-Temple

Aliens? Ice Warriors and to be honest, I’d love to see what could be done with more money with the Menoptera and the Zarbi from Doctor Who: The Web Planet

message 1822: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Watched the first two episodes of Percy Jackson last night. It’s off to a good start.

Good to hear.
My daughter is a big fan of the books and hated the movies.

The kid in this is rumored to be up for Linc in some live action Zelda project.

Ice Warriors is always a good choice.

Also, with a console room that big, they should be able to do multiple companions.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments The great rewatch continues!
The specials put me back in the mood for more Who.

Twin Dilemma: Probably haven't watched this since it first aired on PBS.
It's a rough one.
Colin is fun and I like the design on the henchmen aliens, but man, the rest is a mess.
I get what they're trying for, but the writing is not as strong as it needs to be, they didn't have the budget to make the main villain work, half the cast is struggling to act convincingly and that embarrassing toy gun they gave our space pilot!

At the halfway point, but I'm doubtful the grand finale will redeem this story

message 1826: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Twin Dilemma: Not a great story, but not as terrible as fandom thinks.
Colin is great and I liked the finale.
Uneven script as they try to figure out what's going on and what this new era will be.

Has BF ever gone back to Jacanda and let us know how things turned out with space pilot Hugo in charge?

And to you and everyone!

Thanks to a family member deciding it was easier to let me buy for myself when I was at Chicago TARDIS last month, I've already received the mostly complete run of Big Finish's Once and Future audios (minus the Coda which isn't out until next autumn). Wondering if I might have any surprises under the proverbial tree from anyone else.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments While waiting for the Christmas ham to cook:
My Who loot:

Downtime (DVD): watched this ages ago and own the novelization. Be fun to get to rewatch this.

Underwater menace: I love my son, but he got me the version with the stills and audio, not the animated reconstruction.
Torn on if I want to watch this version, or trade this in and get the animated one.

message 1830: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments The animated one might have both versions. Just saying 😼

I just need to decide how much effort/money is the Underwater menace worth to me...?
Not like it's the Celestial Toymaker or Marco Polo.

I have one of those “wilderness years” productions, can’t recall right now which one. I think it’s Downtime. Haven’t watched it yet.

message 1837: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I had an idea, at one point while feverish this past few days, for a Doctor Who setting, but now I can’t remember what it was. Of course it seemed like a complete no-brainer, “why haven’t they already done that?” kind of thing. But now? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I now own:
Downtime
K-9 and company
Scream of the Shalka

I've seen more of the wilderness shows, but those are only three I felt the need to own.

message 1839: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments K-9 & Company. Got it. I love how they switch out the damsel in distress for a lad in distress (in sacrificial tunic?). Hilarious. And about damn time. That was one of the things I loved about Adric and the whole kidnapped by the Master sequence. It seemed like Matthew Waterhouse was a little too into it at times. 😹😹😹

Still haven’t watched Scream of the Shalka. But I have it.

K-9 and company had a budget of about 50 bucks, but I did like the writing and that they gave Sarah and K-9 there own sidekick/companion.
Always wanted Brenden to show up on Sarah Jane Adventures.

Shalka is excellent.
Really wish they'd done more with that Tardis crew.

message 1841: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments The trailer for the new season is pretty underwhelming, but all the trailers for new Who have been so deceptive, that I can't get upset, because I don't trust new trailers anymore.

Rick | 2260 comments I saw today that there seems to some rumblings in the fandom of bringing back the companions from the TV film. I’d love that. I really liked Chang Lee (Yee Jee Tso) but he’s also played a different character for Big Finish a couple times, a UNIT officer.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Attack of the cybermen: Well, that's better.
Colin is settled in and I appreciate the attempt to fit so much cyber history together.
Solid supporting cast.

The chameleon circuit gag was cute, but had run out of steam by the time they reached Telos.

I forgot how grim some 80's stories could get.

message 1846: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Underwater Menace: Not as terrible as I was lead to believe, but not great either.
The Tardis crew is great, the supporting cast is pretty good and the story is full of good ideas.

The story is more ambitious than the BBC budget can entirely handle and the script has trouble juggling its ideas.
Plus, I'm watching the reconstruction with stills, which never works for me.

message 1847: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Travis wrote: "… The story is more ambitious than the BBC budget can entirely handle and the script has trouble juggling its ideas...."

I would agree. There’s some delightful stuff, but jeez this was way beyond their budget. This is one I’d have loved to see in color. 😹

Also, Troughton's Doctor can be surprisingly quiet and subtle in how he acts and you lose alot of that with the stills.
That and the fish people are in all the promo shots but hardly do anything in the story.

message 1849: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Right you are, on both counts.

message 1850: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Vengeance on Varos: Better than I remember.
Very much a Sunmakers vibe going on here.
Its grim, but doesn't feel grim, just to be dark and grim's sake.

Colin is solid.
Whatever faults's his era might have had, the Doctor was never the problem.
Supporting cast is pretty strong too.
Sil is a great villain. I know he comes back once more.
Shame he didn't carry over into the McCoy era.

The not so great:
Peri: I generally like her, as an actress and companion, but that's in spite of what's on my TV screen.
The writers don't seem to know what to do with her.
Either that or they don't like her.

Her acting/writing/ whatever is so all over the place.
Might have helped if there was another companion. She needs someone, besides Colin to play off.
They should have kept Kameleon.
