Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Indiana Jones 5 is a bittersweet experience, but a very good movie.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Resurrection of the Daleks: I remember this being cooler in my teens.
It has it's moments, but it's also a mess.
Eric Saward loves a high, brutal bodycount, and his attempts to counter the "silliness" he saw in the show is grim, heavy handed and not much fun.

good cast makes this better than it has any right to be.
And Tegan's leaving scene is much better than I'd remembered.

Another story that set up several story threads for later, which neither the show or BF has done much with.

Going into the home stretch of the Davidson era.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Planet of fire: Another one that I remember being better when I watched kit all those years ago.

I can appreciate the amount of stuff they are trying to do: write out Turlough and Kameleon, explain Turlough, introduce the new girl, and, if you can fit it in, maybe tell a story.

It's a mess, full of good bits, but it never fits all the pieces into a coherent or satisfying whole.

Mark Strickson does some of the best acting of his Who career, the supporting cast is pretty solid, considering how little they are given, Anthony Ainley is entertainingly over the top and the leaving scene is nice.

Despite how much Kameleon is given to do, he's treated like crap by the Doctor and his end feels lazy and out of character for #5.

The first half, Peri is painfully annoying. She gets better in the last two episodes.
One more to go.

Good to hear.
Never much of a Barbie fan, but it seems to be made by somebody who loves that world and I'm always happy when that happens to a franchise.

Hopefully, this leads to more Mattel based movies and we'll get the live action Rockem, Sockem Robots we've all been hoping for.

What, you didn’t think Real Steel (2011) with Hugh Jackman was exactly that? Although, come to think of it, it is based on a short story by Richard Matheson and was a Twilight Zone episode.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments To be honest, I had forgotten about 'Real Steel'.

Okay.
That seems weird, as in 'Rose' it's implied the Doctor recently regenerated, but yet there's several box sets of stories before Rose.

Yes. I agree. But then there’s lots of inconsistencies in the both the classic and new series anyway. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Part of why I am reluctant to get too into BF.
It's a full time job making the TV show continuity make any kind of sense, I couldn't afford the tequila I'd need if I tried to do that with BF or the novels.

Rick | 2260 comments I guess I’m just naturally … tequila-ed. 😹😹😹

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments My current Who-based obsession: Who is the solicitor that was overseeing Turlough's exile on Earth?

Were there a bunch of Trion prisoners on Earth?
If Turlough was the only one, what did he do when Turlough disappeared?

A law firm that dealt with aliens on Earth...?
Tell me this doesn't have 'Madam Vastra and company' level potential.

Call me, Mister Briggs, I already have scribbled notes for a potential story.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Caves of androzoni: end of an era.
It's very well written, acted and filmed, but it's not a lot of fun to watch.
So grim and everybody, but the Tardis crew, is up to something or just outright evil.

Do like the chemistry between Peri and Doctor #5.

I just found those films tedious.

message 1670: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Now that you mention it though, I do recall thinking that the suitcase is awfully similar to the TARDIS, being bigger on the inside and all. 🤔 Well Rowling isn’t all that original in her creative process. The Harry Potter character was practically lifted, right down to the glasses, hair, pet owl, and magical destiny, from Neil Gaiman’s The Books of Magic and Timothy Hunter was always a more interesting character. The only real difference being that Hunter is taught his magic from famous teachers without the trappings of a school and other students. Which was always the problem with Rowling’s world building, it cannot work as soon as you get past the first couple volumes, as the whole fabric just falls apart and unravels to logic. It only works when you just buy into all the previous lies, rather like her own world view.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Rick wrote: "😹😹😹

Only watched the first one. It's a mixed bag.
Great looking movie and the expanding the world gave me the first spark of interest in the franchise I've had in years, ( 30's G-men with magic wands...!) but you really can't overlook the baggage that HP comes with now.

But, the main four do a solid job and I could easily see them running from Daleks.
Maybe it's because Eddie Redmayne looks like he's cosplaying as Matt Smith..?

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Underwater menace has been animated.
Apparently there's a teaser trailer out there on the inter web and amazon has a listing (but no release date yet)

Happy dance!!
Hopefully this means the animation recreations are coming back, as the next one rumored was the smugglers!

I'm going to try and be optimistic.
Will be sad if this is the end of the line, but will be happy to get two more stories.

message 1676: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I also rather feel like they keep issuing a “we’re done with animation” notice every few years and then then come and release a couple more, just to test the waters. Then make another announcement and wait a couple years and repeat. In some kind of attempt to ride an artificially perpetuated hype wave.

No idea what the plan is, and some doubts they have one, but if a couple times a year, we get a lost story back, I put it up with it.

Rick | 2260 comments Blue Beetle is one of the few DC characters I like and this is definitely my favorite iteration of the character. I’m just a little annoyed that they moved the locality from El Paso Texas to some imaginary place.

I'm a Ted Kord guy, but this version is my daughter's fave and she has gotten me to appreciate him.

Ah, it's DC, if you get your own made up city, that's a sign you've made it into the big leagues.

Rick | 2260 comments Blue Beetle was not a great movie. It was fun, but the first half was almost painful to watch and sit through. Something happens about halfway through, the stakes are raised, and things got a bit better, but it’s still got a lot of cliché problems. Still it was fun.

It's a very good looking movie, the core cast is solid and likable.
It's one of the laziest scripts I've ever seen.

It has no middle act. It is split down the middle between intro/set up and immediately to dramatic/action climax.

message 1687: by Rick (last edited Aug 25, 2023 07:40PM) (new)

Rick | 2260 comments And it sets up the Reyes family up as nothing more than stereotypes and clichés, presenting the trappings of their ethnicity as nothing but window dressing without any real authenticity. It’s a white American depiction of a homogenized Mexican American family.

message 1688: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Yeah, it wasn't subtle, but I liked them.
Jamie and his sister felt like siblings.
Most all of them gave the tropes and cliches they were handed and gave them a bit of heart.

Not perfect, but stuff like this and Ms. Marvel have been a nice break from the "Woe is me, I am the lonely super hero" stuff.

message 1689: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I’d agree that the actors eventually got ahold of the stereotypes, but it wasn’t until the (view spoiler) that things started feeling like a real family. Prior to that it felt like a badly written TV sitcom family of how a white audience would expect to see a Mexican American family depicted. At the midpoint of the film, after (view spoiler) was the actors all felt like they had something to actually grasp ahold of work with. It even took most of the movie for it be revealed what Jaimes’s degree was in, and yet graduation was why he returned home at the start of the them. And there was nothing else in his character that hinted what his degree might have actually been in. It was almost like what the subject of his degree actually was about, was nothing but an after thought instead of what he’d been studying the last four years, or so, for. It’s an entertaining film, I just found it rather limp and inauthentic. For me it felt manufactured and processed without any genuine inspiration or passion, like just another mass produced product.

message 1690: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Looks like I’m going to see it again this weekend. Another friend wants to see it now. I always find it funny when I go see a movie again that I wasn’t particularly thrilled with it, but I can’t find people to go see a film that I absolutely adored even, if I offer to buy their ticket. Hey, look, Barbie is a brilliant film on multiple layers that has lots of stuff to say about consumerism, feminism, toxic masculinity, patriarchy and living in the buy or die culture we exist in. I’ll buy your ticket, come on. Response: “No, I’m not interested in a movie about dolls. But I’ll go see Blue Beetle now that you’ve already seen it and didn’t like it all that much.” 🤦🏻‍♂️

Yeah, I get what you're saying.
I think, the family being likable made me more forgiving.
I found the girlfriend (can't even remember her name, that's a good sign) such a generic placeholder, and Susan Sarandon was just walking through being 'generic evil person'.

The sheer laziness of that writing and the fact that the actors just seemed to stop trying made them the more offensive to me.

Shame, as it is a great looking movie.

message 1692: by Rick (new)

message 1693: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Oh yes! Here’s a good example for what I’m talking about: Encanto is a wonderful film with a family full of interesting characters, but Blue Beetle was a bland and generic family in comparison.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Rick wrote: "Like I said, I did enjoy it. But that first half was tedious."

The scripts biggest sin is you can so obviously see the 'we need to get from A to B to C..."
Occasionally, it's done in a fun way but most of the time you just sit there going 'Yeah, we get it it, he has to meet the girl etc...'

That's not fair, Encanto is freakin' amazing!
I at least went with an 'okay' show, Ms Marvel for my comparison.

Almost no movie stands a chance against Encanto.

Couldn't one of you have picked The Avengers, or maybe Sapphire and Steel...?
