A bout of covid and the holidays completely killed my writing schedule and I want to get back to it.
Travis wrote: "A bout of covid and the holidays completely killed my writing schedule and I want to get back to it."Good luck.
Been in the mood for some older sci-fi TV:Man from Atlantis: entertaining, but man is the writing all over the place.
Like some of the sci-fi stories and Victor Buono is a treat as a reoccurring bad guy.
Lost in space: Never watched the B+W episodes, so it's been interesting to start at the beginning.
For a family chosen to be space explorers, the Robinson's don't seem good at their jobs.
Doesn't help that it's the 60's, so the girls don't do much.
Man from Atlantis is a tough one. I rewatched the series a couple years back. Ugh. I’m a big fan of Lost in Space, in particular that first season of b&w episodes, is a favorite. Those first 5-6 episodes are so good. But, of course, it really was a product of its era. The stereotypes are blatant and permeate the entire series.
Man from Atlantis: Yeah, incredibly clunky, but Patrick Duffy is decent, I love Victor Buono and there's enough here to keep me going.Lost in space: Like the cast, the ideas and don't really mind the clunky special effects, just trying to be patient as everyone is figuring things out.
Obviously evil Doctor Smith is actually more annoying than campy Doctor Smith.
Each season of Lost in Space got progressively campier. By season 3 I would watch for the scenes with Don West or Will Robinson & the Robot, and pretty much ignore everything else. Loved the opening theme music by John Williams. One of the all time most memorable (and quality) TV show themes.
Well, I’ve definitely gotten back on track with my most recent rewatch. In the last ten (I think that’s right) days, I rewatched: The Curse of Peladon, The Seas Devils & The Mutants. And I started The Time Monster tonight, but I’ll finish that one tomorrow.
Rick wrote: "Well, I’ve definitely gotten back on track with my most recent rewatch. In the last ten (I think that’s right) days, I rewatched: The Curse of Peladon, The Seas Devils & The Mutants. And I started ..."Good solid run of stories there.
Was never the biggest Pertwee fan, but my rewatch has given me a better appreciation of his run.
No Doctor Who Christmas episode, so I had to console myself with the Guardians of the Galaxy holiday special.Nice mix of sweet and goofy.
Rick wrote: "I enjoyed it, but it was a bit too silly for me."It managed to pull back and do something sweet/interesting just about the time I was getting annoyed with the dumb stuff.
Like Tika on Thor, Gunn thinks he's funnier than he actually is and it can wear thin.
I am curious if he can deal with all the loose story threads with just one movie left.
Travis wrote: "… Like Tika on Thor, Gunn thinks he's funnier than he actually is and it can wear thin. ..."I agree 100%. They’re both very talented directors, but Waititi & Gunn lose focus and go down rabbit holes without a firm producer to pull them back. Ragnarök worked at its best, in contrast to the other Thor & Avengers films. Same with the Guardians of the Galaxy films. But a if this was all the MCU had to offer, the franchise would have collapsed a long time ago.

I like how in the MCU, space is both huge and cosmic, and goofy.
I don't like when the humor focuses on 'boy, the heroes are dopes!'
Rick wrote: "I can hardly wait to see how they handle Adam Warlock. He’s a favorite of mine. Fingers-crossed."Big Warlock fan.
Not sure what you do with him if you've completely disconnected him from Thanos' and given his supporting cast to other characters.
Interested to see what happens to MCU cosmic, post-Guardians trilogy.

Let’s just hope Gunn doesn’t make him goofy and dopey - you know like those other Disney characters. 😹
There’s still the High Evolutionary connection from when Roy Thomas & Gil Kane recreated the character from Lee & Kirby’s Him (before Jim Starlin re-re-created him). And since High Evolutionary is going to be in the film, I’m expecting a lot going on there.
Just rewatched Avatar. I was even less impressed with it than I had been. I just wasn’t part of the zeitgeist that loved it when it was in the theater, and I guess I’m still not.
Rick wrote: "Just rewatched Avatar. I was even less impressed with it than I had been. I just wasn’t part of the zeitgeist that loved it when it was in the theater, and I guess I’m still not."Yeah, it's a very pretty movie, but the story is very paint by numbers.
Despite having a decade to work on the script, sounds like the second one has the same issue.
Travis wrote: "… Despite having a decade to work on the script, sounds like the second one has the same issue."Doesn’t surprise me.
Enlightenment: 2022 ended on a rough note, so I needed some Who.Had forgotten how good this story is.
Very cosmic and trippy. Everyone in the cast gets something to do, and the supporting cast is solid.
Mariner is one of those might have been a good companion characters and Captain Wrack is a lot of fun.
Shame the Eternals never came back or that we never got the hinted at 3rd enounter between the Doctor and the Black Guardian.
I’m listening to Doctor Who: The Destroyer of Delights right now and the Black Guardian is present and accounted for. 😹😹😹
Rick wrote: "I’m listening to Doctor Who: The Destroyer of Delights right now and the Black Guardian is present and accounted for. 😹😹😹"I'd forgotten BF did the Key to time sequel.
Part 1 (Doctor Who: The Judgement of Isskar) was simply wonderful. Part 2 (Doctor Who: The Destroyer of Delights) was more traditionally entertaining, of a bit on the silly side towards the end.
Next up is a seventh Doctor companion chronicle (Doctor Who: The Prisoner's Dilemma), and I might get to it today and maybe part three (Doctor Who: The Chaos Pool) I might get to tomorrow, at least that’s the plan.
While I can understand why the 'Man from Atlantis' didn't last more than a season, I am enjoying how nuts the second half has gotten.Apparently, the ocean floor is littered with space-time portals.
Travis wrote: "… Apparently, the ocean floor is littered with space-time portals."Well, you know how these things go. Am I right? And yes, wacky campy fun.
I’ve dug out my discs of UFO and The Prisoner although I haven’t gotten very far in either of them yet.
Rick wrote: "I’ve dug out my discs of UFO and The Prisoner although I haven’t gotten very far in either of them yet."Love the Prisoner.
One of my all time favorites.
So want to use the village in one of my 'Tales of the Shadowmen' stories someday.
Funny seeing bits of perceived wisdom get clobbered during my massive rewatch:I'd always thought the Master showed up all through the Pertwee era, when it was just 1 and 1/2 seasons.
Also thought Ben and Polly had more time with the Doctor before Jamie showed up.
Adric isn't that annoying and spent more time with the 4th Doctor than I remembered.
Travis wrote: "… I'd always thought the Master showed up all through the Pertwee era, when it was just 1 and 1/2 seasons...."It still feels like he was always there lurking just around that shadowy corner.
Travis wrote: "… Also thought Ben and Polly had more time with the Doctor before Jamie showed up...."Nope, it’s that fast.
Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks and then
Doctor Who: The Highlanders
I’m currently listening to a new audio book Doctor Who: The Dead Star that’s set right there between those stories.
Travis wrote: "… Adric isn't that annoying and spent more time with the 4th Doctor than I remembered."Not nearly long enough for me. I’ve always been and Adric fan.
But I suppose I’m biased.
Rick wrote: "Travis wrote: "… I'd always thought the Master showed up all through the Pertwee era, when it was just 1 and 1/2 seasons...."It still feels like he was always there lurking just around that shado..."
Oh yeah, there is that season where he is in everything, so later, you keep expecting him to show up.
It wasn't until years later that I learned why he went from practically being a regular cast member, to not appearing at all.
Rick wrote: "Travis wrote: "… Also thought Ben and Polly had more time with the Doctor before Jamie showed up...."Nope, it’s that fast.
Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks and then
[book:Doct..."
When I play with fanfic ideas, I always want to do something with Ben, Polly and the Doctor (either 1st or 2nd)
They deserve more attention as companions.

Never hated Adric, but will say I did give in to the easy joy of making fun of him.
Travis wrote: "Never hated Adric, but will say I did give in to the easy joy of making fun of him."You and a lot of other people then. I wasn’t watching Doctor Who at the time, but a similar thing would happen to Wesley on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and I was pretty appalled when I’d found out the “fans” of Star Trek were carrying signs to conventions that read stuff like “Wesley Must Die” and “Death to Wesley.” This shit contributed to Wil Wheaton asking to be released from his contract and we lost out on him appearing in the remaining seasons (and the films), and forever altering the trajectory of his career. After reading Matthew Waterhouse’s book Blue Box Boy, I couldn’t help but notice the similarities in the situations. And how awful some “fans” can be when they think they’re entitled. When “jokes” get taken this far, it’s no longer fandom, this is bullying.
Not accusing you of anything, but this kind of shit really raises my ire. I’ve been known to lay down some pretty awful things about Zack Snyder or Keanu Reeves in my time, but these are adults that have somehow had remarkable careers, despite routinely delivering terrible products in project after project. And from all I’ve heard, they’re both wonderful people. But I won’t pay money to see anything they’ve worked on ever again.
Okay, rant over, I’m going to bed.
Lost in space: just reached the episode where Jim Hapwood, space cowboy shows up.Why did this guy never get a show?
He's brilliant!
BF has officially created more 9th stories/content than the TV show.Nice.
I was thinking we'd get Eccelston back for maybe a box set, so I'm glad to see he seems to be happy to be back as the Doctor.
Oh yes, I listened to half of them so far. Looking forward to “series two”, which I’ll likely be starting shortly.
One more episode and I'm done with 'Man from Atlantis'.Fun, but I can see why it didn't last longer.
I actually like the later, goofy episodes to the serious 'we are doing science!' ones.
Wish it had leaned in more to that.
Big Finish Comedy Playhouse is coming! And they’re looking for writers and ideas! https://www.bigfinish.com/news/v/call...
Lightyear is an odd jumble of a movie. Not bad, it can be quite fun, but it's so uneven in tone and ideas.
Wish it had leaned more into the story conceit behind it.
Plus, I'd love a Socks the cat toy.
