This gets tricky, as I like BF, but as a source of info or being 'canon', it's a grey area.

As far as I’m concerned, Big Finish is “canon.” But since “canon” and Doctor Who are all kinds of wonky anyway, it doesn’t really matter to me anymore. So if I like it, it’s “canon.”

I'd discuss this more, but I watched She-hulk and Sonic the hedgehog 2 back to back last night and I think my brain has melted.

Not to say that they weren't both fun, but there's a lot of craziness to sort through.

Rick | 2260 comments I’ve not seen Sonic 2 (no interest), but She-Hulk is filled with two-tons of wackiness - and there’s still 3 episodes to go! 🙀

Only watched Sonic as my daughter is a big fan.
Had way more fun than I expected.

She-Hulk is good, not great.
Decent cast and ideas, but the writing see-saws between clever and lazy.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Watching the Britcom 'Vicious' where Ian Mckellion and Derek Jacobi, are an older, constantly bickering gay couple.

Ian's character is an actor and one episodes revolves around his attending a screening of the episode of Doctor Who he was in.
It's cute and meta.

With two lesser actors, it would last about 3 episodes, but these two are kind of a joy to watch.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments So, the 6th Doctor's new BF companion is a marine biologist in a wheelchair and apparently the internet has issues with it.

I have mixed feelings.
Love that BF, the comics and the novels created companions that weren't just 'a girl from now', but the logistics of getting a wheelchair through that narrow Tardis door sticks in my brain.

Plus, she's in a wheelchair, in audio?

I can't get people getting worked up over this, for good or bad.
Actress sounds good in the trailer.

Rick | 2260 comments Travis wrote: "So, the 6th Doctor's new BF companion is a marine biologist in a wheelchair and apparently the internet has issues with it. ..."

I’ve listened to the character’s introduction, Doctor Who: The Sixth Doctor Adventures: Water Worlds, and it’s nothing all the great. While I did like the new companion, once we got to know her, she was a bit prickly in the first episode, but she warms on the listener by the third story in the set. I also like the whole water worlds themed aspect, except it’s odd that the Doctor takes his new companion on a set of specifically tailored adventures right after meeting them. It does feel a bit pandering. But in the end this was just a typical set of adventures. Nothing really special.

I'm years away from getting that caught up on BF.
Just amused by people getting bothered by a companion in a wheelchair, when it's in a format that they'll never actually see her.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments One of the Who podcasts I follow is doing a lot of BF stuff and it's been fun see what's going on.

The new UNIT series, featuring Brig Bombera sounds fun.

Love that they did a sequel to Ribos Operation with the 7th Doctor.
You know the only reason they chose him, is because of how much McCoy rolls his 'R's.

Rick | 2260 comments I just saw McCoy in the Munsters film from Rob Zombie. He was fine, but under utilized. The film was about as campy as the Flash Gordon film from the 1980s, but no where near as entertaining. In fact, it was pretty much terrible.

It’s a prequel to the TV series. So these filmmakers basically made the same mistake as those that made the Thunderbirds film. That one was a prequel to its TV series as well. Sigh. When will they ever learn … oh right … NEVER.

Didn't mind the prequel idea, except that aside from them buying the house from the TV show, nothing else seems like it's trying to lead to the TV show.
And if they were thinking they'd save that for the sequel...well, I think I have some bad news for Rob Zombie...

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Earthshock: Really solid, well done.
Everybody brought their A game.

This Tardis crew has really gotten my attention and I like them more than the first time around.

Like how they took 6 actors in Cybermen costumes and made it look like an army.
Classic Who did that really well in a couple stories.

Only grumbles: The older woman woman playing the Captain seems really awkward trying to do sci-fi.
and every stack of heavy crates used to block out the Cybermen are obviously empty cardboard.

My wife didn't know this was the story, and I kept quiet, so she was a little gobsmacked when the moment came.

Even knowing it was coming, they did a really nice job of building to it.
Seeing Adric's run, in order has given me a better appreciation of him.
Never hated him like fandom said I was supposed to, but I've only recently started to really like him, and this Tardis team.

message 1423: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments There is a short series of Big Finish stories with Fifth, Adric, Nyssa & Tegan. I haven’t listened to them yet. I’m saving them.

What I'd like to see more of is stories that are Adric and the 4th.
There was a nice dynamic there.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments One more Earthshock thought: The crew of the freighter don't recognize the Cybermen, but the whole point of the bomb is to attack the conference that is about to declare war on the Cybermen...?

Despite that, this story sets up an interesting corner of the Who-universe and BF needs to do a Cyber-war box set.

message 1426: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments There are a lot of Cybermen offerings, I’ve not listened to all of them, they might already have.

message 1427: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Timeflight: Now, this one has a bit of a 'meh' reputation from fandom, but I really enjoyed it.

Fun romp with lots of weird science, great supporting cast (why hasn't the flight crew gotten a BF story?), both companions get stuff to do and some nice moments touching on the previous story.

Yeah, a lot of the budget got blown filming at Heathrow, so the other sets and effects are...let's say, uneven, but I've seen cheaper looking Who stories.

Yeah, they never really explain what was up with the Master's disguise, but that's a pretty minor grumble.

message 1428: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Arts of Infinity (yeah, I'm dealing with a stressful work week by binging Who): the story is a bit shaky in spots, takes the Doctor forever to figure out it's Omega, but there are a lot of fun bits to make up for it.
Solid cast.

I forgot this was the story Colin Baker was in. His scenes with Peter Davidson are fun.

Design is great and the stuff in Amsterdam was a nice change from everything happening in England.

message 1429: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Also:

Like the combo of the 5th Doctor and Nyssa. Hopefully, BF has done some stories with them.

We also need a story where Tegan is back on earth and she, her cousin Colin and his friend solve weird mysteries or something.

Maybe she joins Australlia's branch of UNIT...?

message 1430: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments There have been a LOT of 5th Doctor stories with Nyssa and Nyssa & Tegan. Also stuff with Tegan and Turlough. And some with 5 and Peri. I don’t think they’ve spun Tegan off into her own series, but with her appearance in the new special, anything could happen.

The Target line started a series of companion solo books.
They did three and then the idea went away, but it put the idea in my head, so as soon as a companion leaves, I start thinking about what adventures they had without the Doctor.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Nearly finished Logan's Run.
Fun series, but I get why it's not better known.
Cast is decent, but it really struggles to figure out what it wants to be.

Good chunk of stories in the middle, but alot of stumbling around.

message 1433: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Snakedance: we seem to get the best acting out of Janet Fielding when Tegan is evil.

Am I the only one thinking that Martain Cules, who plays Lon have made a good Doctor?

Good story, that is technically about the end of the world, but focuses on a smaller, personal menace.
Feels like we should have gotten one more Mara story. It should have been a trilogy.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Mawdryn Undead: weird little romp, but great to see the Brigadier again.
While I like Turlough, I'd forgotten what a jerk he was in the original trilogy.

message 1436: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Terminus: Okay, I watched this while heavily dosed with cold medicine, but this thing is a mess...!
It's a collection of ideas that never seem to come together in a way that make sense.

Maybe it's because we had to wedge in the Turlough sub-plot and Nyssa leaving and that hurt the script, but I don't think that fully excuses this story's chunkiness.

It's not terrible. There are bits I liked:
Nyssa had a nice leaving scene that made sense. Some effort was put in.
The Garm is a cool looking alien.
Pretty solid cast. The lady space raider felt like a good candidate for new companion.

I actually find this true of a lot of stories of the classic series. And it’s why so many stories scream for a sequel.

I enjoyed Wakanda Forever.

message 1445: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Glass Onion was almost as good as Knives Out. In some ways it might even be better, but for myself there were a couple of little bits that felt off. In any case, I loved it and am looking forward to eventually seeing it again. Rian Johnson said in an interview that he’ll likely start working on the third one in January, as he’s currently obsessed with trying to find ways to play around in this particular genre of whodunnits.

My biggest problem with it, is you keep waiting for Chadwick to show up.
The movie never quite manages to escape his shadow.
Good movie, it just had an impossible hurdle to get over.

Like a good mystery movie.

Think it's hilarious when Rian asks what people think he should do for the third movie, and so many people want him to do the Muppets.
