Aside from Wallace and Gromit, I've just seen him in a couple sitcoms.
The character he plays in Summer Wine just has an odd philosophical air and dry sense of humor that seems very Doctor-ish to me.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments The great rewatch resumes!

Castravalva: one of the best regeneration stories.
The two halves work together quite nicely.
Always fun to see the Tardis team trying to cope without the Doctor and I'd forgotten how much I liked Davison's low-key Doctor and his quiet sense of humor.

Good stuff.

Rick | 2260 comments I just listened to, over the past several days, the Big Finish 1963 trilogy:
Doctor Who: 1963: Fanfare for the Common Men
Doctor Who: 1963: The Space Race
Doctor Who: 1963: The Assassination Games
Which they produced as part of the 50th anniversary celebration. Loved the first one with the fifth Doctor, was disappointed with the second featuring the sixth Doctor and really, really enjoyed the last with the seventh Doctor.
Doctor Who 1963 Fanfare for the Common Men by Eddie Robson Doctor Who 1963 The Space Race by Jonathan Morris Doctor Who 1963 The Assassination Games by John Dorney

Rick | 2260 comments I also find it interesting and fascinating how all three feature some aspect do the Cold War in addition to how Doctor Who: 1963: Fanfare for the Common Men is looking at the music mania of 1963, Doctor Who: 1963: The Space Race is looking at the race-to-the-moon contest between the US and the USSR, and Doctor Who: 1963: The Assassination Games is looking at the assassinations that plagued the 1960s.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments 4 to Doomsday:
way better than I remembered.
The plot almost feels like a Star Trek script.

While I want to dopeslap Tegan and Adric, I get why they acted the way they did: this is a very new Tardis team, they barely know each other.
I do like how the Doctor is so low key and quiet that you think he's out of his depth and then he does stuff that reminds you, he is the smartest guy in the room.

The spacesuit Adric wears in episode 4 is just repainted Sontarian armor!

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Also like how Four to Doomsday keeps of the tradition of the Doctor just letting random people have a space ship.
There's these guys, the pirate crew from Black Spot, Ghostlight and Co.
They're all over the place.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Rumor has it, Disney + may be getting the Doctor Who rights.
Mixed feelings, as it's one less reason to put up with amazon, but also don't like the idea of the mouse owning everything.

message 1365: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Kinda: strange and trippy, but really well done.
The sort story new Who would try and do.

While, I've always liked this Tardis team, rewatching makes you see there was more going on.
Wether the actors or the writers, there is the structure of a traditional Tardis team, but there seems to be a bit more...depth maybe, or at the least more shades of grey to them and their interactions.

NewWho pretended to be the more adult version, but this feels like they actual did it, without feeling the need to announce it.

Interesting

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Visitation: fun romp.
Like the Terriliptils. They should come back.

The highwayman, Richard Mace is on my list of 'would have made a great companion' and I am still enjoying how dysfunctional this Tardis crew is.
The 5th Doctor has a bit more Hartnell in him than I remembered.

But, I got my entry in, so I know I can do it again next year.

How did that work?

Yeah, I'm gonna need more than that.
I like the Ruth Doctor and hope RTD does right by her, but she could also end up on the same shelf with the Valyard and finding out what blew up the 11th Doctor's Tardis.

I'm about 33 episodes away from finishing the Prisoner.
Such a good series!

I enjoyed UFO but not sure it I'd rewatch it.
Couple good episodes, but knowing we never get answers keeps it off my list of 'great shows'.

And who tells everyone why it’s a Police Call Box? We know The Doctor lies. They’re an unreliable narrator. And an almost worthless primary source.

The Doctor lies was told to us by River Song, the ultimate unreliable narrator, so I'm gonna call BS on that bit of wisdom.

Yeah, let's trust the liar when she tells us someone else is a liar.
Moffett loves having an awful woman lecturing the Doctor on how he's a bad person.

and it still doesn't explain the Tardis, as we saw it in 'Unearthly Child' and first heard the Chameleon circuit wasn't working in that story.

message 1383: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Won't be posting reviews on my Prisoner rewatch, but I will say how much I've enjoined the three 'filler' episodes before the grand finale.

All three are clever, experimental and well directed.
Kind of amazing to see that they took something they were contractually obligated to put together and decided to have fun and push the boundaries of what they could do.

message 1384: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Black Orchid: Nice little romp, thats only flaw is it really needed a little more room to breath.
At three episodes, this would be better regarded.
At two, it's rushed.

Everyone seems to be having fun.
Nyssa gets more to do, Tegan finally relaxes, while Adric just eats and looks confused by everything.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Prisoner rewatch: all done and it's still brilliant.
I get why the ending is controversial, and why it's love it or hate, but I'm in the love it camp.

It gives the show an ending, but it's an ending where you have to fill in some blanks and make your own decisions.

I get why it's divisive, and I don't begrudge people that it doesn't click for, but man, I love it.

One of those things where every time I come in contact with it, I get the urge to write fanfic.

Curious to see the AMC reimagining or whatever er they made.
Don't think prime has it.

The mini-series with Sir Ian McKellen? It’s very, very different. But good in its own way. The original is certainly better, but I did really enjoy the new series as well. But then I’d probably find watching McKellen write out his grocery list spellbinding.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Found a site that is streaming the short-lived 'Logan's run' TV show.

It's very late 70's sci-fi, and an endless quest show, but it's fun and the three leads are decent.

I think I watched the first episode or two when it aired, couldn’t get into it. Part of that being the book is so much better than the film, but also I had a HUGE crush on Michael York. Between Cabaret, The Three Musketeers, The Four Musketeers and then Logan’s Run - I was a lost cause.

Like the movie, don't remember much about the books, thought they were okay.
The show is fun and cheesy, but I get why it only lasted a season.

York is definitely in the best film version of the Three Musketeers.
It's funny, as York is the Hugh Jackman of the 3 musketeers, as he looks nothing like the description of D' artanigan (sp?) from the book, but he's what everyone thinks of.
Other movies pick actors that resemble York to play the character.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments At what point did the Doctor get control of the Tardis back?
In New Who he can go wherever he wants, treats the Tardis like an uber for companions and the idea that he doesn't know where he's going is BS.

But, it seems like McCoy's Doctor was able to steer where he needed to go.
Moreso in the books, but several episodes in his last season.

Did all that messing with the Tardis the Time Lord's did during the 6th Doctor's era knock something back into place?
Did the 7th finally decide to to fix stuff?

message 1398: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I’ve often wondered this as well. I was only half paying attention to this the last time I went through the whole run, so I do t think these an exact point when it happens. New Who is definitely ā€œhas complete controlā€ while classic is is various levels of ā€œhow do you steer this thing?ā€ I’m almost tempted to say it was during the eighth Doctor’s time, or maybe during the Warrior’s tenure in the TARDIS. Maybe the Time War fixed it. That would certainly explain why toward the end of the classic Who series, the Doctor has some degree of control and other times not so much. Tentacles of the Time War reach back to earlier incarnations and forward well into the more recent Doctor’s eras as well.

message 1399: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments I'm going with the 7th Doctor.
he had shenanigans that could be connected to the Time War.

The 6th Doctor may have been used by the Time Lords, as part of the war, but the 7th was definitely up to something.

message 1400: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments There are Big Finish dramas with every Doctor from at least the Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh and the Warrior (aka War Doctor), dealing with some aspect of the Time War - that I know of. And even some very tangential stuff that connects with the First, Second and Twelfth, and then there’s also the War Master range as well, and the Gallifrey Time War range, etc. etc. When you break time, cause and effect cease to have meaning and words like past, present and future are no longer applicable. There’s even an alternate Fifth Doctor now that’s is technically a War Doctor, portrayed by Colin Baker: Doctor Who Unbound: Doctor of War 1: Genesis & Doctor Who Unbound: Doctor of War 2: Destiny.
