Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Reading the Target novelization makes me realize the TV movie is not as bad as fandom makes it out to be.

Like I say in my review, it's not even the worst Master story.

Again, I am rebelling against the perceived wisdom of fandom.

message 1303: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments I really like the TV movie. I know I’m in the minority. I think have all, or at least almost all, of Paul McGann’s audios from Big Finish. Haven’t listened to them all yet. Not read the novelization of the TV film. The Star Trek novelizations burned me out on such things.

message 1304: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Generally don't do novelizations myself, but I own nearly all the classic Who targets, so am happy New Who is now getting theirs and will obsessively be adding them to my collection.

Started with McGann because I buy one book and I have his whole run.

Rick | 2260 comments Travis wrote: "… Started with McGann because I buy one book and I have his whole run."

McGann is the reason I got hooked on Big Finish. Originally I was ONLY going to get Eighth Doctor stories, so I’d have more than just the film for him. But slowly but surely (that greedy monster) Nicholas Briggs sucked me in and now wants ALL MY PAYCHECK! He’s shameless!

I don't do BF, but am addicted to the Targets.
Though, if Spotify is carrying BF stuff, I may spring for a membership for my birthday.

message 1307: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments No clue about Spotify. Anyone else out there know?

Of course. Sounds like my luck.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments trying to avoid the avalanche of rumor and info out there since the announcement of the new Doctor.

The only bits I like, which are blatantly untrue, are the rumor that the actress who plays Penelope on Bridgerton is up for companion and the picture where the new Doctor actor is photoshopped into Colin Bakers' coat.
If either of those happen, I'll be impressed with RTD.

message 1311: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments 😹😹😹 Don’t they always photoshop the new actor into Colin Baker’s coat? Honestly, I think RTD has better fashion sense than that. Look at Eccleston & Tennant’s wardrobe choices, I’m expecting something contemporary with a bit more color than RTD’s other Doctors. But I’d actually be happier without a set “14th Doctor” outfit. I’d love to see this Doctor wear something different for each story. It’s funny that I think the worst fashion choices are for Doctors 4, 5, 6 & 7 - and JNT, as showrunner, was responsible for 5, 6 & 7, but 4 started the downward spiral with that scarf (as impractical as Batman’s cape) and question marks on the collar. They’re also the ones who seemed to have the least amount of variance in the wardrobes.

And I think the Penelope actress got folded into this as she and the new Doctor were photographed together at some event, being very chummy and friendly. Doesn’t mean she won’t be the companion, but it also doesn’t mean she is.

I prefer a set outfit for the Doctor that gets the occasional tweak.
I can do without the question mark collars, but liked the rest.

The Doctor just wearing clothes kind of annoyed me, the worst offender was Capaldi's hoodie and t-shirts.

message 1313: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments Travis wrote: "… The Doctor just wearing clothes kind of annoyed me, the worst offender was Capaldi's hoodie and t-shirts."

Not his greatest look, but I Loved the guitar and sonic sunglasses, so I’d put up with a lot from Capaldi. I think the attempt there, with the hoodie and t-shirts, was to try and bring back some of the “cool to be square” hipster vibe that Matt Smith exemplified. This was also while Moffat was floundering badly as showrunner. Capaldi could make anything work, he was that good, but some things were definitely working better than others. Clara, for instance, NEVER worked for me. Ugh. Just as bad, if not worse, than Peri and Mel.
Although, now that I’m thinking about it, if ANY Doctor could actually pull off that awful coat that Colin Baker wore, it might just be Ncuti Gatwa.

I had trauma blocked those out.

I cheered when the viking snapped them in half in the first lady me episode.

My dream is to cosplay as that viking and carry around a bag of sunglasses and when someone asks me who I'm supposed to be, I'd take a pair out and break them.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Started watching Logopolis and my copy of Scratchman arrived.

It's just a festival of Tom this weekend!

message 1318: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Logopolis: End of an era.
I know I can go back and rewatch any of it whenever I want, but still feel slightly sad.
Tom is my Doctor.
For many years he was the only Doctor.

Busy story. reintroducing the Master, bringing in a new Tardis crew, a regeneration and tell a story.
and the story is good. Very cosmic and trippy.

Fun to see Tom with Adric, Nyssa and Tegan.
Would been interesting to have seen a season with them as his Tardis crew.

message 1319: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Forgot to mention: I love seeing the double credits in a regeneration story where the list the old snd new Doctor.

Just always makes me smile.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments taking a break in the great rewatch, as I shift from the forth to the fifth Doctor.

Luckily, Obi-wan Kenobi is streaming and I have a couple writing projects to keep me busy.
Was annoyed that the BF contest won't allow you to create new companions, but since my story stars the 12th, that just means I get to write Nardole!

message 1327: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments So, what old monsters/villains/etc would people like to see brought back for the next Doctor?

My list:

Celestial Toymaker: should be Doctor Who's version of Q, yet we only got one story.

Yeti: yeah, we got the Intelligence, now bring back those big furry menaces.

Thals: did they finally get wiped out? Where are they?

Well, get yourself a copy.
Not sure if they could have pulled off a movie, but the book is a big love letter to the 4th Doctor's era.

message 1332: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Started reading one of the Time Lord Victorious novels.
Despite the title, I'd spaced that it is connected to one of my least favorite bits of the RTD era, the end of Waters of Mars.

This book better be great, cause I'm seven pages in and already annoyed.

Eh … if you’re not into the “concept” … I’d just bale now.

It’s like an anniversary special with multiple Doctors, but they all have their own backstories before the events start brining them together.

message 1334: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments The Knight, the fool and the dead: so close to being a good book, but it keeps tripping over its own premise.

Tennant, at the end of his era was a mess, whiney and self pitying and TV Time Lord Victorious crashed and burned after ten minutes.
Filling in the gaps between 'Waters of Mars' and "End of time' is a good idea, but this reads like a TV episode and where it fits in continuity feels like an afterthought.

I am a sucker for a m multi-doctor story, so that part is nice and Brian the Ood is the best part of the book.
BF needs to make him a companion.

Rick | 2260 comments This was my review for Doctor Who: Time Lord Victorious: The Knight, The Fool and The Dead

Doctor Who: Time Lord Victorious: The Knight, The Fool and The Dead Doctor Who: Time Lord Victorious: The Knight, The Fool and The Dead by Steve Cole

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

While I’m enjoying the collecting aspect of the Time Lord Victorious multi-media crossover, even though the individual components are not really working for me. I’m hoping that eventually, all the myriad pieces will finally click into place and the whole crazy tapestry will coalesces into a brilliant and gorgeous narrative. That’s probably not going to happen. There were some moments in this book that worked really well. Really, really well. But other aspects just felt flat and perhaps even contrived. Over all, the story is fine. It is entertaining and suspenseful, but it’s also forced.

I’ve got that on audio. I’m waiting to finish the War Doctor Begins series from Big Finish to listen to it. I’ve listened to 3 or the 4 volumes so far, just waiting on the last to get released. They also just had a sale on some BBC audiobooks, I picked up about 5 with the 12th Doctor and 3 with the 13th Doctor.

I know that odds aren't in my favor, but just getting something written and sent feels like an accomplishment.
Wasn't able to pull that off, the last two times.

My wife is convinced I'll win and Peter Capaldi will love my story so much, he'll do the audio version and invite us over for tea.
