And Christopher Lee would regenerated into David Warner!
(The actor not the Australian cricketer)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments State of decay: half way through and another story that is better than I remember.
Really nice sets and costuming, nice creepy vibe ( even Tom takes it down a notch to emphasize how serious things are) and again, one of the gripes about Adric is Waterhouse is a bad actor, but I'm not really seeing that here.
He feels like a teenage boy from another planet.

I have mixed feelings about E-space, as it's a nice little trilogy, but E-space is such a vague term and there's nothing that really sets it apart from our universe.
It needs a sequel or more stories.

message 1155: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments State of decay was a nice, solid story all around.
I like the addition of Adric to this Tardis crew.

Rick | 2260 comments Just finished rewatching the last three episodes of Christopher Eccleston’s series as the Doctor. I had finally purchased Series One on Blu-ray quite awhile back and I’ve slowly been watching it an episode or two at a time for months. But I just couldn’t stop as I got to the end. The Russell T Davies years were so good. And as good as Christopher Eccleston was, it just got better under David Tennant. And Series Four was the best of them all. 😻
But now I’m heading back to Season Seven to Season Eleven of classic Who and I’ll be rewatching Jon Pertwee’s era. UNIT. The Brigadier. Liz Shaw. Jo Grant. Sarah Jane Smith. The Three Doctors. 😸
But FIRST … I have to finish Matthew Waterhouse’s book: Watchers! 😸😸😸

message 1157: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Ecceleston's season was very solid. Would have loved to seen him do another.
Russell had some good stuff, bringing Who back and re-establishing classic ideas and monsters.
By the end he and Tennant were kind of running out of steam, but there was a lot of good stuff along the way.

I'm finishing up Tom's era.
May take a break before jumping into the 5th Doctor's stories.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Warrior's Gate: Still as weird and trippy as I remember, but a better story than I remember.

Think the first time I must not have seen the whole thing (this was waaaay back when it ran on PBS) as it makes much more sense this time and I had no memory of Romana's leaving scene.

Lots of great ideas, really nice sets and effects and a solid supporting cast.
Like that the crew of the freighter weren't nessicarily evil, but just working class knuckleheads in way over their heads.
Especially liked the two maintenance men.
They should have gotten their own show.

Liked that the setting is big and cosmic, but the stakes are small and personal.
Romana's leaving scene was nicely done and I now what to write 'Adventures in E-space' fanfic.

Matthew Kresal | 119 comments I adore State of Decay, it's one of my "rainy day" Classic Who serials that I can turn on and enjoy. The same is true of the E-Space trilogy as a whole, which I seem to revisit with some regularity.

In addition to Rick's list there's also Doctor Who: The Invasion of E-Space written by Full Circle writer Andrew Smith in his first piece of Who writing for Big Finish. And there's going to apparently be an E-Space story in the second Eighth of March set from them, as well.

The E-space trilogy was excellent!
So much better then I remembered and I'm so interested in learning/seeing more.
So much potential.
Would love a Romana and K-9 series.

Feels like an idea that New Who could really run with.

Nice! I realized after the fact that I'd totally forgotten about the E-Space trilogy Big Finish did with the Peter Davison Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan, and Turlough in the form of Mistfall, Equilibrium, and The Entropy Plague that wrapped the older Nyssa arc they had running for a few years in the Main Range. They're on your list now.

Nice! I’ve got the first season and the last couple movies they did with Daredevil & Thor making appearances. There’s a fun one with the Hulk on a plane that features a pretty much unrecognizable (meaning mostly grown up) Brandon Cruz, Bixby’s costar from Courtship of Eddie’s Father. Keep me posted on how the seasons progress, I watched when it was airing, but haven’t seen anything besides what I have of disc since then.

So happy to have all the seasons.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Keeper of Traken: great looking story, really solid cast, lots of clever ideas and Tom is sharp and giving his all.
Knowing what Anthony Anliey is like later, it's very cool to see him acting here.
His scenes with Tom are really good.
The Doctor and Adric are a good combo. Shame they didn't get more stories together.

Only gripe: It takes the Doctor forever to figure out the bad guy's secret and the show really stumbles on the reveal. It's badly edited and paced.
Most of the last episode is a rushed jumble.
Shame, as it's a big deal.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments So, when my insomnia kicks in, it'll sometimes give me story ideas/fragments.

This week, it gave me basically a season for the sixth Doctor including one where my subconscious figured out a way to have Peri and Mel together in a story.

So weird, but now I need to rearrange my already shaky writing schedule and then find a fanfic site for this stuff.

It's weird, as I don't particularly like Mel, but my brain
's idea of she and Peri interacting has me scribbling notes.

It's been fun, but so strange how my brain's been working lately.
I won't complain, as anything that gets me back writing regularly is welcome.

Rick | 2260 comments Help!

I’ve made another Doctor Who list. This is for the Unbound Doctors. Books or audios that feature Doctors that are not from the televised sequence of Doctors: Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, T Baker, Davison, C Baker, McCoy, McGann, Hurt, Eccleston, Tennant, Smith, Capaldi, Whittaker, etc.

https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

Please feel free to add any books or audios that feature other or Unbound Doctors.

Matthew Kresal | 119 comments I know that a couple of the Big Finish Short Trips anthologies (as in the proper book ones) have stories in them featuring Doctors from the Unbound range alongside their "canon" counterparts. Plus the Short Trips and Side Steps features the Cushing movie Doctor and at least one non-TV incarnation, as well.

There we go … Dr. Who and the Daleks, etc. 😸

message 1186: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2260 comments This is bizarre, the website seems to presenting them as if, in fact, these were made as films. “Before the fifth film, Dr Who and the Yeti Invasion of London, was released work had already begun on preparing the sixth instalment in the series. Armed with [a] list of possibilities, the two producers began to cement their plans [for a sixth movie]. Those, however, were derailed when Peter Cushing was forced to cancel all work commitments for personal reasons.” I had to go double check and make sure that there were only the two films made. Makes me a little leery of ordering them. Like: are these people crazy? The covers even state that they’re based on a film. Uh, no they’re not. I feel like whoever is making these is living in a bubble somewhere, ignoring the world outside, in favor of the world made in their imagination. But I added them.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Yes, the books are basically the novelizations of movies that never happened.

Want to check them out, but ordering from the UK the shipping is crazy and it could take months to get here.

Yep. And yet I keep ordering CDs from Big Finish.
“Hi, my name is Rick, and I’m a Big Finish addict.”

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Yeah, don't mistake this one burst of self restraint, as some kind of radical change.

I'm just going to channel that 27 bucks they would have charged me for shipping on the books and instead use it to complete my Addams Family funk pop collection.

Obverse has tried to get around the shipping issues by putting stuff on Lulu, letting non-UK customers order things via print on demand.

It worked, for awhile. There was a guy scalping the Cushing novelizations (which were originally a limited edition) so Obverse put them up on Lulu again, since they were for-charity. The scalper then started buying those and selling them at marked up prices, along with books from other Who-centric publishers. Obverse led the charge among the publishers in reporting the seller who, in turn, filed a copyright claim on behalf of Studio Canal (who own the rights to the Cushing movies) claiming copyright infringement on the Cushing books. Obverse's entire Lulu store went down, and it was only gradually restored without the Cushing novelizations.

I'm well aware of the events because it hurt sales of The Silver Archive #5: Dark Skies, which I wrote and had more than a few US fans of that series trying to buy it through Lulu who suddenly couldn't, Thankfully, it's available again (along with much of Obverse's other titles) but the Cushing books are a no-go on there due to what's happened before.

interesting to learn the why of it, but sucks that it's yet another factor keeping me from checking out these books.

Guess I'll have to add the Cushing Doctor to my fanfic 'to do' list.

They, like Forgotten Lives (and its upcoming sequel) are only available now directly through Obverse's own site/store. If you go out to the Lulu and the Obverse store on there, they're not available as a result of the copyright claim. So, if you want them, you've got to buy them through Obverse and pay the international shipping. Which, as Travis said, is sadly a factor keeping more people from checking them out but it is what it is.

Rick | 2260 comments Matthew wrote: "They, like Forgotten Lives (and its upcoming sequel) are only available now directly through Obverse's own site/store. ..."

I might pick them up. We’ll see if they keep nagging at me. I used to paying insane shipping costs for stuff from Big Finish Productions and now Anderson Entertainment (which is doing some nice stuff for fans of the Gerry Anderson shows).

message 1199: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments I will probably break down myself and buy them, but that price tag is very intimidating.

message 1200: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2397 comments Been quiet here, so time for a random question:

What's a historic period or figure that the Doctor hasn't been to/met that you'd like to see happen?
Extra points if you have a specific Doctor in mind!

My list:

The American revolution: during the occupation of Boston could make for some good historical shenanigans, or maybe Philidelphea and the Doctor could meet Ben Franklin.

Late 1600's Jamaica: Pirates, the Spanish main and a tropical setting

Amelia Earhart: I want her disappearance to involve aliens or time travel and have her become a companion.
