I was able to start Crowded Street on Sunday.
I wonder what Mrs. Hancock would say if she would know in the future there would be women scientist and engineers. She was so against Muriel learning astronomy.

So far, I really identify with Muriel in a lot of ways. I grew up in a very small town, and I've always been very shy and socially awkward. I was interested in math and science (especially astronomy) too, and I was discouraged from pursuing those interests because in small-town 1970s a girl was supposed to be focusing on preparing herself for marriage and motherhood. Thankfully, I didn't have the pushy, social-climbing type of mother that Mrs Hammond appears to be. I am very intrigued by Delia Vaughan the suffragette. Although this first section of the book was named after Clare, I found that she didn't really make much of an impression on me yet.

Please realize that if you haven't completely read the first 13 chapters, there could be spoilers.
