April | 65 comments I read this book in the 80's, around 1986. I think it was general fiction, not sci-fi

The main character was a man and he time traveled back to the 1800's from modern time. There were no cars, but horses and trains. It took place in america.
There was a special plot point with a coin that he was given to him by his grandfather. I think the coin was gold. He didnt want to spend it but he had no money.
I think the spoiler twist ending was that he met his grandmother and realized that he was/is his own grandfather. He was unable to go back to the future - he was stuck in the past.

I have a vague recollection of a scorpion. Unsure if the scorpion was on the coin or in the title.

Not sure if the book was old or new in the 80's.

I dont think it was a Heinlein because the book was one of those larger paperbacks that most books come in these days. Heinlein books are always the smaller books and thin.

April, can you tell us more about the hero - his age, job/skills/interests, marital status, kids, family, rich/poor, personality, etc.? Is this book for older adults?

Any romance?

Where does he live - country, region, city/town?

message 3: by April (last edited Feb 21, 2020 09:38AM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

April | 65 comments The MC was probably in his 20s. I think most of the book took place in the present. (Present being a non technology present like it was back in the 80s)
It ended with him realizing he was stuck in the past and having to spend the coin.
The cover was I think artwork and ‘messy’ like it had a lot going on. and it was green ...

I can’t remember where the scorpion comes in but there has to be one ...

I can’t remember anything that happened in the book at all ... but my aunt loaned this book and The Kin of ATA are Calling You to my dad at the same time

It took me 5 years of searching plot keyword to figure out it was the kin of ata!

Rainbowheart | 28718 comments Still looking, April?

We should probably add "adult fiction" to the header.

April | 65 comments I'm looking until someone tells me what book it is ... lol

It can't hurt to "bump" your thread every month or three. That will bring it back up to the top of the list, where fresh eyes can see it. Good luck!

April, I added some plot details and a spoiler alert to the topic header, so your book might be recognized from that description alone. Many members only read the headers.

Feel free to update it by clicking the small "edit" link after the header. This only works on the full Desktop website - not the Mobile website or app. (On the Mobile website, there's a "Desktop version" link at the bottom of the page.)

- How did he travel back into the past?
- Definitely a coin, or possibly a medal, etc.?
- Was the coin handed down through the generations from a great (...) grandfather, if he travels back to the 1800's?
- Any sense of his job or skills?

April | 65 comments I only remember the end of the book and it ends with him in the past with the coin which is gold ... i have no idea what happens during the main part of the book .. lol it was that memorable ...

April | 65 comments Time Travel to olden days with a coin and becoming his own grandpa book bump!

Rainbowheart | 28718 comments Up the Line?

It was suggested over on Alicia's thread.

April | 65 comments Thank you for the suggestion. I read some reviews and its wikipedia page, and that is not it. and now i am thinking it isnt like the book alica is looking for.
It is unfortunate that i cant remember the bulk of the plot of the book I read. And I actually cant remember anything that happens in the book except the end. And it ends with the time travel to the past. So there is only once instance of time travel. It wasnt a sci-fi book. I kind of think the book was about a man who was looked down on by his family and who made a lot of bad choices.
The cover was green and circular.
When the man ended up in the past he had his grandfathers gold coin and that was the possession that he had and it ended with the hint that he would have to spend it, and then he saw his grandmother crossing the street ...

I have very little hope of ever finding it LOL

Jamie Dacyczyn (readsintrees) | 297 comments Following, just because I love time travel books. This one doesn't ring a bell to me though...

April | 65 comments so recently I posted another book I could not remember the title of and someone remembered it. But the details that I remembered of that book were very skewed from the original that it makes me wonder about my recollections of this book.
Things I remember for sure:
It was the 80s - after 1985 and before 1991
The book was paperback (I think it was a larger paperback like books are now, not the smaller paperbacks from the past, and I think the cover was black and green)
It was not science fiction but just fiction (adult)
The book took place in America (I think east coast)
The book ended with the main character going back in time to the 1800s - so time travel isn't an element of the story and I think is the twist ending
The main character was a man and I think not liked by his family. Maybe his brother stole his gf?
The main character had a coin that was his grandfathers and the coin was the only thing he had when he went back in time. (besides his clothes)
The reason I think he becomes his grandfather is because at the end I believe he see's his grandmother from across the street.
I am guessing the whole story is setting up for the reader to guess that he is his own grandpa? I really cant remember anything from the story - only that end.
Thank you to the person in the future who reads this and tells me what book it is!

April, I tried to edit the header/ topic title based on your September 14 post. Feel free to update it.

Previous header: "Adult Time Travel with Coin, read in 1980s. Man travels back to 1800's U.S. with coin (gold?) given to him by grandfather. Scorpion. Spoilers ahead."

April | 65 comments somebody please remember this book!

April | 65 comments it was a trade paperback!!! I don't know if that will help the search.

Tariq Roozitalab | 2 comments Hello there!

First of all, I want to apologize in advance: I began searching for this book in 2020, and found it using your post. I meant to order it on Amazon but lost the listing, and since then, the title. I read this book in Middle School (December 2013-ish), and remember a few more potential details, provided we are talking about the same book (based on what you describe, and based on the events I remember from the first time I found this post, I believe that to be the case):

• I believe the time travel was caused by a door on the outside of the house. I want to say it was a crawlspace-like door.

• The family the boy belonged to was inheriting this house from the boy’s grandfather, who gifted him the coin at the beginning of the book.

• There is a phrase on the coin that loops. Something akin to a looping sentence of “The end is never the end is never the end,” but not that exact phrase. That stuck with me because I had really liked the idea of that looping text.

• Detail I’m least certain on, but am still kinda certain on, is that the title had the word “Mr.” In it. Could be wrong on that, though.

Everything you’ve described in this thread thus far sounds right too. I’m fairly sure we’re talking about the same book.

Sorry I didn’t update this thread sooner! I made an account for this purpose so that this time I can try to help find it. I didn’t expect you to still be looking years later! I’m going to keep looking, but please tell me if any of these sound crazy not at all close for you.

message 30: by Jamie (last edited Jun 25, 2023 01:54AM) (new)

Jamie Dacyczyn (readsintrees) | 297 comments Somehow I didn't see April's update until Tariq just commented....but yes, those extra details are definitely from "Mr. Was". The coin in the original post threw me off, since that wasn't in Mr. Was (the main character, Jack age 15, does have a modern quarter that gets him in trouble for having a future date stamped on it, but that's it). His grandfather didn't gift him anything, because in fact he died in a fit of rate when they met for the first time. The boy's father was abusing his mother, and that's why they went to live in the grandfather's house. Jack finds the door in a closet, and goes back in time a few times. When his dad finally murders his mother, Jack goes back in time (1930s) to try to wait out the past and save his mother. He ends up involved in WWII, and loses his memory. By the time the 1990s comes around (now an old man), he starts to remember things. His grandfather wasn't himself, but rather the boyfriend of the girl that Jack falls in love with in the 30s, which is why his grandfather dies in rage they first time they meet. Old-Jack The phrase Tariq remembers is "What goes around comes around what goes around comes around..." but it wasn't on a coin, it was on a computer screen in his grandfather's house. Argh, I'm so annoyed I didn't see the update on this thread, because I would have known it right away from the added details. This is one of my favorite time travel books.

Capn | 3506 comments Mr. Was for Tariq's find :)

April | 65 comments I found a website with a digital copy of Mr. Was and I read the ending which is the ONLY part of the book I am looking for that I can remember - and unfortunately it is not my book. The book I read was not young adult. And the only time travel was at the very end. And there was no way back to the characters proper time.

But thank you for the suggestion! Keep them coming!

April, do you think he was tempted to spend his grandfather's coin in the present day (because of some bad decisions)?

I copied a few book details to the topic header. Feel free to edit it.

well possibly he could have been tempted. But since he has the coin when he goes into the past he didnt spend it. Did you have a book in mind?
I just wish I could remember more plot details.
Thank you!

It looks promising! I bought a copy and as soon as it gets here we will know! and double promising is that I was living in texas at the time I read it.

Google Books has a snippet preview of Scorpio Rising by R.G. Vliet - Ayshe's suggestion. You might get lucky searching for keywords:
- There are different cover images.
- Quote from the book: "You can pitch it at the floor and it'll bounce a mile, it's got that much silver in it. It rings like crystal. It's the first silver dollar my great-grandpa, A. T. Castleberry, took in in trade when he opened his general merchandise store in Alto [Springs]..."
Amazon's description:
- "In contemporary New England and turn-of-the-century Texas, two stories unfold--one of Rudy, a congenitally deformed stationery store manager, and the other of Victoria Ann Castleberry, whose choice of a husband leads to murder."
One Amazon reviewer says:
- "Just as soon as we get to know Rudy intimately (I loved these sections), the novels shifts back from 1976 to the early part of the century. The graves whom Rudy visited in the opening chapter belonged to the characters who are now living and breathing: Victoria Ann, aunt Velma, and Victoria's parents. (...) But as soon becomes apparent, this shift to the past is the whole point of the novel."
This review on Goodreads is quite detailed - with Spoilers:

A HUGE Thank you to Ayshe for finding the lost book!!!
Since I read this book about 35 years ago so many details were lost in my memory of it. Which kinda makes me laugh.

It was a silver coin, and he did spend it in the past.
It wasnt his family that disliked him but the whole town, and Idk that they disliked him as much as they were uncomfortable around him due to his deformity.
It didnt end with going to the past, most of the story takes place in the past. And it is true that his future ended in the past.
Spoiler - He was his own grandpa! The book didnt really say that but it was implied.
The Scorpion was in the title and the MC was a scorpio.

My advice to others looking for books is to never give up. Because someone else out there also read that book.
