I read this in late 90s, early 2000s and I literally remember nothing other than there is a character (not the protagonist) who hasn't spoken since childhood because someone (I'm almost certain it was his brother) told him there's a bomb in his brain that will go off if he talks. I don't think that was even the central plot but it's the only thing that sticks in my mind... I believe the protagonist is a young woman...omg please help it's been bothering me for months
