Frank Prem (frankprem) | 150 comments Another wonderful review of Devil In The Wind posted by Mary D. on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 starsShort Free Verse, Easy to Follow, Gut-Wrenchingly Written
August 5, 2019
Format: Paperback
Devil in the Wind: Voices from the 2009 Black Saturday Bush Fires, is not to be missed. Prem's choice of poetic delivery reminded me of a children's picture book I'd once read that had done the same thing. I'd loved it, and I was curious to see if Devil in the Wind could stay with me, too.

The prologue quickly brought me into the victims' and survivors' thoughts and feelings, and I couldn't help but relate the author's swift speed in this to how fast a fire spreads. And, the way the words themselves were organized on the paper visually captured the essence of fire burning for me.

It was this surprisingly intense moment once I saw the words "aflame." The realization brought me that much closer to the terrible level of magnified fear, that tug-of-war struggle within about what you want to do versus what you should, and that overwhelming feeling of heartache that was felt like waves in the water. There was no putting Devil in the Wind down after that introduction, and I was not disappointed in a single line afterwards.

Thanks Brenda. It is, isn't it?

I actually have some exciting news that I'm not sure where to mention. My next collection is not far away - The New Asylum - a memoir of psychiatry.

It looks like I'll have 2 significant book launches happening, which is delightful and dead-set scary.

Fun fun fun!

Just create another thread for it in here - the Author's Spotlight section - just like you have for your others. Or you can combine them all in one thread if you'd like to keep them all together :)

Congratulations on the great news too Frank!

Sharon that is wonderful news.

I had a meet the author reading in Yea, (Victoria) last night. Only a modest gathering, but such interesting and interested people!

Among were 3 people who had traveled from Marysville (which is at the heart of the Black Saturday story).

It was quite wonderful to meet them and the others.

Actually it was amazing - I talked of immigration issues 9from Small Town Kid), and in the audience were 2 ladies from a Nigerian background - we talked a lot afterwards.

Also spoke of mental health and mental illness, in the context of the next collection. Sure enough, there was someone there prepared to speak about his own experiences of the mental health system.

i'm in awe of the power of words and stories to impact so meaningfully on people's live.

This is a wonderful gig to have.

Last night was great, Brenda, but in truth I enjoy all of these readings very much. It's lovely to be the catalyst for some of these discussions and personal sharing.

I have a number lined up between now and the end of the year. I actually get quite nervous before, but I think it's just performance stuff that settles at showtime.
