Apocalypse Now - 40 years later
The epic American movie, Apocalypse Now, was released in 1979. Forty years later, I still remember seeing that movie with my senior English class as we were studying the classic novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. It was a great example of how to take a book and make it come to life for a modern audience.
Book 1 - The movie was based on Conrad's classic, Heart of Darkness. Read a book that has a title of 3 words or more where the beginning letter of each word, is found in Heart of Darkness.
Book 2 - General Kurtz was the villain of the story and he was played by Marlon Brando. Read a book that has a main character who is a member of the military.
Book 3 - The film, Apocalypse Now, was directed by Academy award winning director, Francis Ford Coppola. Read a book that is written by an author that is listed on Goodreads as having three names, Eg Edgar Rice Burroughs, Arthur Conan Doyle.
The three books must total at least 750 pages.
No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used.
Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may NOT be used

2 is Better than 1!
Book 1: If one author is good, two are better!
Read a book that is a collaboration by two authors. A one author name that represents two authors works.
Examples: Larry McMurtry & Dianna Ossana , Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, Marion Zimmer Bradley & Diana L. Paxson, Stephen King & Peter Straub
GR Best Books by 2 Authors
Book 2: If you like a single word title, you will love a single compound word title!
Read a book with a single word title that is a compound word (i.e. a word composed of two words)
Examples: Middlemarch, Quicksand, Sweetland, Cloudstreet
Book 3: If one character’s name in a title works, two names are sure to be a winner!
Read a book with either two character names in the title or one name that includes a first and last name.
Note: Titles, including non-English ones, (e.g. Dr, Sir, Mr, Mrs, Herr, Spanish titles Don and Dona, etc.) don’t count as first names for the one character option.
One character examples: Oliver Twist, Clara Callan, Marie Antoinette: The Journey
Two character examples: Zeke and Ned, Parrot and Olivier in America, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
The three books must total at least 750 pages.
No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used.
Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may NOT be used

PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES
My husband has just retired so I am being treated to non-stop TV about Trains, Planes or Automobiles. And as this season’s Villains need some sort of escape transport these will form the basis for this 3 book challenge.

The first Passenger flight took place on January 1st 1914. According to BBC News Qatar's 17.5-hour flight from Singapore to New York , which first flew in 2018 is the Worlds longest flight FOR NOW. Most flights however are shorter than this – for me 12 hours seems a long flight. When flying I try to pass the time by listening to books on Audio
Your book for this option MUST
• Feature a pilot, flight attendant or member of the air forces of any country
• it must be available as an Audio format with a listening time of AT LEAST 12 hours . You Can read any format it just needs to be available as audio .
When reporting If not obvious in GR data please state what character appears in your book. Also please state the Audio length when reporting
BOOK 2

Read a book with
• At least 301 pages
• Feature a car on the cover and
• Has a 3 word title where the initials of each word must appear in the name of the car as printed above

(a task idea by Maya)
All three books must equal 900 pages total. No Childrens, GN, etc.
Option 1 :
Read three books which all have a color of the rainbow in the title, no variations (ex : The Greenway not accepted because GREENWAY is not a color)
Option 2 :
Read three books that seem, from their titles, that they would all be part of the same series. All three books must be by separate authors.
(ex : Jane, Jane Two, Jane, Unlimited)
Option 3 :
Read three books with the exact same average rating on Goodreads. This must be verified.
Obviously needs to be fleshed out a bit, etc, but it's a fun start!

What Else do we Celebrate, and Why
Book 1: March is Women’s History Month
According to the United States National Archives (https://www.archives.gov/eeo/special-... ) “National Women's History Month was established by presidential proclamation in order to draw attention to and improve the focus on women in historical studies. It began in New York City on March 8, 1857, when female textile workers marched in protest of unfair working conditions and unequal rights for women. It was one of the first organized strikes by working women, during which they called for a shorter work day and decent wages. Also on March 8, in 1908, women workers in the needle trades marched through New York City's Lower East Side to protest child labor, sweatshop working conditions, and demand women's suffrage. Beginning in 1910, March 8 became annually observed as International Women's Day.”
Read a book by a woman author*, either fiction or non-fiction, that fits one of these criteria
A. Main page genre is “Labor” or “Unions” or
B. A female character is a union activist (examples: Rivington Street, Autobiography of Mother Jones) or
C. First published in 1857, 1908, or 1910
*The book can have a single authors or multiple authors, but all authors must be women.
Book 2: April 22nd is Earth Day
“On April 22,1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.” (https://www.earthday.org/about/the-hi...)
A. Read a book from this list: Best Environmental Books or
B. Read a book first published in April 1970
Book 3: May Day
May 1st has two distinct holidays:
May Day is a celebration of spring, coming mid-way between the vernal equinox and the summer solstice.
“The earliest May Day celebrations appeared with the Floralia, festival of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, held on 27 April during the Roman Republic era, and with the Walpurgis Night celebrations of the Germanic countries. It is also associated with the Gaelic Beltane, most commonly held on 30 April. The day is a traditional summer holiday in many European pagan cultures...As Europe became Christianised, the pagan holidays lost their religious character and May Day changed into a popular secular celebration.“ (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_Day)
May 1st is also International Workers Day. Although not widely recognized in the United States, the holiday was originally established to commemorate the 1886 Haymarket Affair in Chicago where a strike for the eight-hour workday led to accusations that labor activists had thrown a bomb at police during their protest.
A. Read a book with Paganism as a main page genre or a book with flowers on the cover, or
B. Read a book set in Chicago or first published in the 1880s or set at least 50% in the 1880s.
