I would have read it late 90s to early 2000s. It was fro. What I remember a picture book. It was funny I think. I cant remember the plot but I do remember these people or animals foxing/ decorating a bus or other big van. That's about it sadly

Can you describe the illustrations - realistic/cartoony/cute, simple/detailed, painted watercolors/bold graphics, sunny/dark/muted colors/black & white?

Do they remind you of another illustrator or picture book author?

They were quirky, my mum said it had a 70s feel. I think they were relatively detailed cartoons. Bright ish but not crazy. Pretty sure it was set in the countryside

Is it a short story from Joan Aiken's A Necklace of Raindrops and Other Stories? That has a girl and her mother/grandmother living in an old bus... nice colourful illustrations too in some editions.
