Summary: In this book Will treaty a ranger has to raid a castle to free a friend and to stop the evil ruler from letting an army of fierce scotti come across the border and take over all of the mackinaw fief. He is successful in the end with help from his friend horace, malkam and his patients, and gundar with his crew.
Analyzing setting: The Book “The siege of macindaw” by John Flanagan takes place in a medieval time period where all the warriors use swords lances or axes or in the case of a king's ranger a longbow. Where all the lords ladies, kings and queens live in castles and in the case of the knight sir keren a strategically placed castle in the northern aurulen fief of Norgate. Sir keren has made a deal with the scotti to come down through the mountain pass and take over norgate with castle macindaw as a point of command. With the threat of the scotti, wills friend alyss captured, living in the northern snowy, dark, cold, gray norgate fief this setting sets the mood and it isn't super happy pleasant one either it is more grim and determined. None of this is helped either by the fact that will and his companions are living in a dark foreboding forest that most common people think is haunted. In this setting even the bad people have grim moods there are a number of times where sir keren expresses his regrets and worries to his prisoner alyss. Although all of these settings and are rough the worst one would be alysses; locked in a tower cell with no way to escape.
Opinion: I enjoyed this book because of many reasons but i think one of the biggest ones is the amazingly smart and cunning plans hatched by will treaty the newest ranger in all of the kingdom. One of these such plans is his plan to hide under a upside down cart that has been brought up to the castle walls hours before this plan enables he and his friend horace to get up close to the walls and storm them before getting shot. Another of his brilliant ideas was for his friend malkam to make a big light show and other noise and distractions on in the forest on the side opposite side so that Horace and will can lead the assault.
