see comment history I read this book when I was fairly young, around 2010. I remember the cover had a girl with a round head, with a brown bob and red lips peering over dark sunglasses. In the book, she always wears long sleeved black dresses and dark sunglasses because it's a classic look. Her parents don't let her do much but their apartment is filled with amusement rooms including some sort of fake orchard, a fake carnival with cotton candy and other goodies replenished by the cook every day, and a room containing a giant tree that she climbs and it was imported from somewhere, I think Australia. Her parents have built these rooms so that she will have lots to talk about at cocktail parties when she's an adult. She befriends a redheaded girl somehow, and I specifically remember that she eats health food such as spirulina which tastes like algae sweetened with honey (?). Anyway, the redhead girl's dad (I think) is a hypnotist that sees reincarnated patients. One of the patients (or maybe the main girl, I can't remember) recalls a scene from the late 1800s or even early 1900s in which someone is hanged in the town square. There may be other flashbacks involved, but I'm not sure if this is actually part of the book: There's a man named Kincaid who is involved in a crime, and he seems like a woefully misunderstood lumberjack type and there's a school with nuns in his same town. Anyway, seems like heavy topics for a chapter book, but I'm pretty sure I read this and the former details should be real.

Janae Mancheski | 21 comments Found it! It's called Pish Posh by Ellen Potter. Tips for other people: If you remember even the weirdest sentence from a book you've read, type it into google inside quotation marks.

Janae Mancheski | 21 comments Now I reread it and the last part about Kincaid is not in the book and I want to find where that came from. Jeez. I read too much when I was a kid.

Rainbowheart | 28699 comments No such thing as reading too much, lol.

You might want to make a separate post about the lumberjack. I'm sure someone can identify it.
