Wyatt | 6 comments The Lies Of Locke Lamora could be good as a tv show directed either by Martin Scorsese (in order to film the many flashbacks and crime family scenes in an entertaining way) or Tarantino (for the witty dialogue and violence). Of course it wouldn’t fail in the hands of a different director, but those are the styles I think would work the best.

Also The First Law in the hands of David Fincher could be good, of course I’m borrowing from Daniel
Greene here....

Both excellent choices.

Ruth | 170 comments Controversial opinion: I don’t want any more books to be turned into movies or tv shows. I want studios to develop more screen-original content that isn’t based on some preexisting IP.

Haha that would be something! Idk if it's controversial so much as very unlikely. Hollywood isn't known for its originality.

message 55: by Phillip (new)

Phillip Murrell | 604 comments Show business no longer exists. It's simply BUSINESS, Entertainment Division. There are plenty of original ideas; however, the passionate people with them have no money. Those with the power and money have no passion beyond multiplying those two categories. As Ice Cube said in 22 Jumpstreet: "Do the exact same shit as last time!"

I suppose at least we’re getting stuff like the Lovecraft Country adaptation. I would really like it if there were more adaptations of modern stuff, and less rehashing of Tolkien, Lewis etc.

message 58: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2798 comments Yep. More genre shows are better for me especially if they are adapting and following the increasingly diverse published stories, which would give more opportunities to a more diverse group of actors. Would be great indeed to have Trail of Lightning, Rosewater, Jade City, The Poppy War, etc on the screen.

message 59: by Gary (new)

Gary Gillen | 193 comments I would like to see the Dream Park series by Larry Niven and Steven Barnes adapted for TV. There were four novels in the series. It was about a virtual reality game (Back then it was done with holograms). The novels mixed hard SF, mystery, horror, and thriller.

message 60: by Hans (new)

Hans | 189 comments I think any of Mark Lawrence's books would lend itself to series or movie adaption. I would love to see Prince of Thorns and its two follow-ups, but I think the Book of the Ancestor would work rather well, too.

I second Remnant population, but for the sake of the story, I am not concerned about actress.

One of my favourite series, Foundation, is already seeing the light of day. I really hope it doesn't end being more glitz than substance, as the trailer indicates:(

I would love to see Imperial Radch: 3 Book Series or Red Rising as a series and the The Invincible as a movie or short miniseries.

message 62: by Harry (new)

Harry Heitman | 4 comments I think that some of the great SciFi novels are so grand, sweeping and complex, a conversion to film is just too expensive. Case in point, 'Dune'. Yeah, I know they are working an a 'grand new' version of 'Dune' but somehow, I remain pessimistic.
I prominent director with a big budget can do these things but too often, they fall flat. (Waiting to see what happens with 'Three Body Problem'

message 63: by Dave (new)

Dave Poole | 1 comments Until Peter Jackson did LOTR I would have said Fantasy doesn't translate to the big screen. Since then Game of Thrones has shown that others can do it too. That makes me optimistic.
Julian May's Pleosciene saga would tickle my fancy.

message 64: by Tony (new)

Tony Mohorovich (tonymohorovich) | 14 comments Ringwood by Larry Niven.

And it looks like it’s happening:

message 65: by Craig (new)

Craig | 11 comments I think the Neal Asher 'polity' series would work well on TV. Got a lot of different elements in play there so could aim at a few audiences. Would like the Shannara series to be given another go but perhaps aimed at an older audience (the one a few years back had the same issue as Sword of Truth for me).

Legends of the Dragonrealm is a great series and would love to see that on screen but post GoT that would probably be a hard sell.

The Age of Five series by Trudi Canavan would be something i would check out if it was done right (the million dollar issue with most of the adaptations these days).

message 66: by Alabaster (new)

Alabaster | 38 comments I would love to see Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archives as a film. That said, given how deep/introspective the series is, it'd be incredibly difficult to pull off. Maybe it'd be better to leave as a book.

OOOH good suggestion! I can absolutely see either Netflix or HBO doing that - and am now eagerly praying for it!

message 68: by Kristenelle (new)

Kristenelle | 107 comments I would love to see Remnant Population as a movie! Elderly women as main characters make me super happy.

I'm really excited about a bunch of things that are supposedly already in the works: The Broken Earth Trilogy: The Fifth Season / The Obelisk Gate / The Stone Sky, Wild Seed, Lilith's Brood, and The Three-Body Problem.

I've been wondering if Murderbot could be adapted to the screen? I love Murderbot except that the setting is always difficult to visualize and there is too much internal technical dialogue. But I'm not sure how Murderbot's adorable personality would still be effectively portrayed.

Gideon the Ninth would be interesting! It is such a visual book already. My only fear is that it would ruin the book.

I do find one difference between Game of Thrones and Amber in regards to the characters though. Game of Thrones had a good dozen or so characters that you could relate to and cared about. In Amber it was one.
The Amber Series did provide me with some fantastic D and D ideas when I was in High School though.

I think the Amber series was the first example of Calling Cards I can think of.

message 86: by Max (new)

Max Gaddis (angel24633) | 8 comments The Graceling series would be cool as a mini-series but I think the problem with book adaptations is that we all have imagined different things so while books are descriptive, they also are personal since you can imagine specific qualities on the characters, whereas television shows and movies try to reach as many people as possible and are consequently out of tune with what people who actually read the book would like to see.
Also hollywood and tv have this annoying habit of drawing things out way longer than they need to be, if they made more faithful adaptations we might be happy with a season-long series of certain books like Mysterious Benedict Society or the Matched series. If my favorite books get adapted I would prefer limited series not movies because i hate that "part one part two" thing and an entire 5 season series would be too much so I think mini-series or just one season would be cool.

message 89: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Martin | 1 comments Once Patrick Rothfuss is done with the third book, so we don't end up with a Game of Thrones dilemma again, I would love to see the King Killer Chronicles on a long drawn-out but well funded (HBO style) series.

Also interested in seeing another one of my recent series I have read turn into three movies, perhaps a show I haven't decided. But ideally three movies based on J.M Coetzee's Chidhood, Schooldays and Death of Jesus. It would be hard for any movie to capture all of the wonderment of what he does philosophically, but someone can try to capture it on film!

Steve (steve8201) I'd love to see The Tripods Collection: The White Mountains; The City of Gold and Lead; The Pool of Fire; When the Tripods Came made into a miniseries. It needs some updating - it's a very male-centric book - but the story is compelling and the aliens and their cities are vividly imagined. The second book, The City of Gold and Lead is one of my all time favorite science fiction books, and with today's CGI the City would look amazing.

Awesome idea. since it's a franchise that few remember. In the late 70s, Tolkien was my intro to Fantasy and John Christopher was my intro to SciFi.
