Read this anywhere from maybe 2000-2013(sorry terribly memory). Not sure if this is a YA or not but remember the MC being relatively young not past his 20's I don't think. The dog stayed with him during the duration of the book until his journey was complete.

Found it. Writing out the plot jogged my memory and I drudged up Firestone from the depths, that led me to a mental picture of the cover and violà it is Firestorm
