Lately it seems that every time I encounter lots of characters in books I have been getting confused about their roles in the story. I was wondering if it was me or the author. After reading this, I think it may be the author! There were lots of characters in this one, but only a couple I had a hard time keeping straight (Sancia's friends). Other than that, I was good to go!

Oh absolutely it's the author, especially when you have different POVs. If the author doesn't give enough "voice" to each character you just can't see the difference in them. When an author can create personalities in characters that you can easily visualize and differentiate, that's the author really getting into that character's head and making them real. I love that.
