Rise and shine! What general impressions do you think of the first portion of the book?

Please leave all overall conclusions and any specifics about the book for the full discussion thread, open on the 7th!

Oleksandr Zholud | 927 comments A nice easy read, I enjoyed it! In terms of style it reminded me of the author's earlier work, namely The Eyre Affair.

Also the thing that has no influence on the plot but can be an interesting discussion edited not to endanger readers

Gabi | 3441 comments I'm 6% in and find it a nice read so far - or better, a nice listen, though I'm not quite excited about the audiobook narrator (which of course has nothing to do with the story)

Anna (vegfic) | 10464 comments I want to know if the US edition, published several months after the UK edition, has been "translated" like Harry Potter was! Or does it have lorries, jaffa cakes, Chelsea buns, etc.?

Rachel | 1406 comments I’m in line at the library so should hopefully get it this month - the US version I expect

Anna (vegfic) | 10464 comments Oleksandr, even though your question isn't a spoiler, would you mind editing it out and waiting for the spoiler thread? It's a pretty big question in my opinion, and might change how people read the book. Some people can't resist opening spoiler tags!

Oleksandr Zholud | 927 comments Anna wrote: "Oleksandr, even though your question isn't a spoiler"

done

Victoria Lestingi (vlestin) | 41 comments I’m really enjoying the bizarre setting, reminds me of Terry Gilliam’s Brazil, for some reason.

That's unfriendly. All that local flavor gone...

The US edition of Early Riser still has all of those things. I sometimes hear complaints about the cooking in the UK but these desserts sound pretty good to me.

Ariana | 659 comments Liking this a lot! Enjoying the humorous writing style.

Yes, I'm ever so often giggle out loud.

Cheryl (cherylllr) I'm in queue at my library...

Christopher | 981 comments I'm thinking about DNF'ing this one after a few pages, I just don't think this will be my cup of tea and I have a lot of TBR. Would break my streak of reading every book club book in 2019, however. Hmmm...

LOL! I know the feeling (not about this one, though). That's the only reason why the one from last month is still on my kindle: my resolution for no DNF for group reads.

Gabi | 3441 comments Folks, I'm having such a good time with this novel. Meanwhile I got accustomed to the narrator of the audiobook and appreciate the enhancement of the 'Britishness' his voice lends. I can't remember the last time I giggled so much while reading/ listening to a book.

Dawn F (psychedk) | 1223 comments He reads with a slight Welsh dialect which what probably my favorite part of the book as I love Welsh lol

Raucous | 888 comments I'm about 50 pages into this book and I'm really enjoying it. It's great to see this author writing again. If I had to pick a word to describe Early Riser so far I'd settle on "charming." That's a bit weird given the setting but he pulls it off.

message 18: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne | 3 comments Books that are funny are my favourites, and this has some very funny bits. It reminds me more of shades of grey than the Eyre affair, has a very post apocalyptic feel to it. I like it but The Eyre affair is still mt favourite.

Love the premise and the world, really appreciate how fast the chapters are and reading a book short enough that an hour of reading translates to more than 1% finished!

Not sure the structure works for me, but I'm curious how this story will go!

I love that the group finally bought into something light and humorous. This is just my kind of ridiculous.

Paul Freeman | 64 comments Just couldn't get the humour in this one -- I've tried Jasper Fforde once before and I can't get into the style

Just started- only about 20 pages in, but this is such a breath of fresh air after the last two books I read. Love the humor- not sure what all is going on in the world just yet but excited to continue. I’m also relieved about the pacing and short chapters.

message 23: by J.W. (new) - rated it 3 stars

J.W. | 229 comments I finally got this one from the library and had the chance to start it today. I cannot overstate how much I love and adore this premise. It feels so cozy to me, and so welcome to me. I hope it keeps up, only about 15 pages in, but I am in love so far.

Rachel | 1406 comments I finally have my hold waiting at the library! I’ll get it tomorrow. 🤞🏼

Meredith | 1819 comments I started the audiobook of this and I'm really enjoying it. I love the narrator's Welsh accent, it adds a lot to the story. I am also appreciating all the details of the world we are getting. Fforde has thought through so many aspects of how it would be different from our world. And I definitely am enjoying the humor, laughing out loud a lot.
