ABANDONED. Historical fiction read in middle school. Possibly during the Civil War, family takes in a hurt soldier & hides him from enemies. Author wrote old western novels? Spoilers ahead.

Its a book that I think takes place during the civil war, It is about a family that takes in a hurt soldier and is hiding him from the enemies. At one point in the book, they play the piano with him, they end of getting caught and the soldier dies and I believe the mom gets hurt or dies. So then the children are forced to find their brother who is fighting in the war. It's a historical fiction book that I read in middle school which I believe was in between 2009- 2012. The author I believe also wrote a book about western times, and I believe it was about a guy who was pickpocketing people, and it has Doc Holiday in it. Please help, I absolutely loved this book as a kid. Also, it was a historical fiction book, that I read for an AR test in school.
