Michael Gardner | 19 comments Hello wonderful librarians

Can you please add this book to a series.

Olivia (livka) | 7926 comments Hi Michael,
Are there characters in common or continuous storyline between the books in the series or is it only a common theme that makes them a series?

It's a common theme. The series will be published as one volume when the final story is finished.

Michael Gardner | 19 comments It's a series that you might compare to The Twilight Zone or Black Mirror; self-contained stories that share a similar theme. Can someone please help me with this? This is a new release so it's important the series information is accurate.

Many thanks in advance.

Emily | 17632 comments You can add series information in the description of the book, but it doesn't sound like it can be a formal series on Goodreads. The characters or universe in common is the requirement, even if it is a series elsewhere.

Michael Gardner | 19 comments The Universe is common. There's direct cross-referencing to the other stories. I'd appreciate the series information being added. Thanks.

Michael Gardner | 19 comments Okay, I've never been asked to justify series information before. This seems to be an unprecedented decision to not add series information given the librarians who have commented haven't read this work or any of the others.

This story directly references the 'Absolute Immersion' technology that appears in the previous story. All these stories have links, much like the Black Mirror series on Netflix. I wish I didn't have to compare this series to a TV series, but it fits.

Please don't make comments like this. It can be considered calling out which isn't allowed.

I have added it to the series.
My comment was in response to the statement "self-contained stories that share a similar theme" which in and of itself does not constitute a series on Goodreads.
We have to ask about series all the time. Those librarians just didn't ask, or maybe they could tell and didn't feel the need to ask.
I appreciate your providing additional information.

Michael Gardner | 19 comments Understood. I'm sure you can appreciate the frustrations that happen when one is questioned about the nature of their own work. Especially when it goes on for days. I apologise for the remark. Thank you for fulfilling the request.

I think it would be helpful if there were clear guidelines for what constitutes a series and why a librarian may decline the request. Given we're dealing with 'art' - inverted commas - it seems to be a black and white decision for an subject that has many shades of grey. I offer that feedback in the spirit of making Goodreads a better place for everyone.

Again, thank you for your assistance.

The part about what is a series:
As a general rule, a book is only part of a series if that designation would apply to all editions of a work. To be a series, books should have characters and/or universes in common. In the case of imprints and other non-series collections, it is common for some of these books to be published under numerous other imprints as well.
