Thank you, Bonnie! I also read and loved The Animal Ark series, but this is not what I was thinking of. As I remember T.A.A., they were very sweet stories which maybe take place in a village. They are probably suited for like a 2nd grade reading level?
The books I was thinking of have a similar premise, but I think they were slightly darker/not as sweet. Children are helping rescue animals from abusive, possibly illegal situations, such as a puppy mill. I think they have a slightly higher reading level, too, maybe for about age 10-12.

They’re definitely a slightly darker version of Animal Ark, and they fit the age group you mention. I thought of the series immediately after reading your description, but I couldn’t remember the series name! It took a little bit of searching, but I remembered it! :)

They’re definitely a slightly ..."
Thank you so much, Tris, and Rosa for linking! It is indeed the Vet Volunteers series. It makes so much sense that this series I loved so much is by as wonderful an author as Laurie Halse Anderson.
To the best of my recollection, plot revolves around different children helping a veterinarian rescue animals, such as puppies and horses. Maybe the children volunteer at the animal clinic. I think each book is told from the perspective of a different child and deals with a different "case."
Is there an orange cat named Socrates? Possibly a mystery element?
Children's series, read about 2000-2002. I think there were books being published around that time, when I was also reading them.
